CLAT changes are fundamental, so should be the changes in CLAT prep!
Few days back, certain changes related to pattern and approach of CLAT 2020 were announced. A video released by Prof Faizan Mustafa clearly indicates the fundamental shift in the way aspirants will be tested beginning CLAT 2020. On persisting requests from my team, some students and their parents, here is my understanding of CLAT changes. Also some anticipations for CLAT aspirants of future…
Fundamentally, CLAT shifts from testing memory and knowledge to testing aptitude. Precisely speaking CLAT would focus on testing candidate’s ability to be a good student of Law Education at top Universities of the country. All sectional mentions in the video are good examples to understand this fundamental shift. The legal aptitude section most likely goes away - thus no test of “knowledge of law, before studying law”. Instead a focus on deductive reasoning - that’s ability to make logical deductions from given statements very well illustrates the shift from testing-knowledge to testing-aptitude. Something we have commonly referred to as Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning in the domain of Management Entrance Tests like CAT, XAT, SNAP, IPMAT, SET..
More examples to understand the shift. No maths but Data Interpretation, meaning CLAT would shift focus from testing knowledge of arithmetic, algebra to testing skills in making quantitative conclusions from the data presented in various forms, something which has been a favourite with all management entrance tests as DI.
The changes expected in GK/CA section also follow the same philosophy. The questions on static GK are to make way for questions on current affairs, shift from testing memory to testing habits of staying updated with the environment around.
What this means for young students aspiring for CLAT 2020 and beyond..
1. While students may feel the pressure of un-doing some prep they might have already done, I feel the proposed changes are welcome changes, expected to bring more rationality in selection as the focus shifts from memorising to developing aptitude.
2. The proposed changes significantly reduce “the syllabus” (hence the burden) needed to prepare for CLAT. I anticipate the CLAT aspirants of future to be relieved of their current burden of investing long hours (often skipping school) for CLAT prep. The prevailing mandate of a two-year long intense CLAT coaching would shift to a 3-day per week kind of year long CLAT prep, manageable along with regular studies of class-XII. The need to invest “a drop year” post XII in CLAT prep would significantly go down.
3. Students would be able to keep more options in hand as same preparation would be needed to crack two otherwise significantly different streams of Law and Management.
4. More and more CLAT aspirants would now want to be mentored by CAT experts instead of Law experts. The expertise needed for CLAT prep is now perfectly aligned with expertise that CAT trainers have.
The changes in CLAT, in my view, are no less than a reform. And like all reforms, these changes would bring to front all students who reform the way they approach CLAT. The good news is - this is one reform that actually helps students reduce their burden significantly.
Happy learning!
