Mizoram University

Researchers from Mizoram University have described a new species of scorpion, Liocheles gracilipalpus, from the Western Himalayas in Jammu and Kashmir.

The discovery was made by Virender K. Bhardwaj, Sunil Katal, Prof. H. T. Lalremsanga and Zeeshan A. Mirza of the Department of Zoology, Mizoram University.

Named Liocheles gracilipalpus, the species was found in Reasi District and formally described on 14 August 2026 in the American scientific journal Euscorpius (No. 441).

The scorpions were found under rocks and in human-modified habitats of the Shivalik Hills, highlighting the still-underexplored biodiversity of the region.

The official celebrations began at 8:00 AM with the unfurling of the National Flag by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dibakar Chandra Deka. The flag hoisting was followed by a rendition of the National Anthem and an inspiring address by the Vice Chancellor.

Adding a special distinction to the morning's proceedings,, Prof. Deka presented the Best Library User Awards to outstanding teachers, scholars, and students to recognize their dedicated engagement with the university library.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. N. Albert Khizo, Registrar in-charge of Mizoram University.

Congratulations to Prof. Manoj Kumar Verma

MZU is delighted to extend its heartfelt congratulations to Prof. Manoj Kumar Verma on his selection as a Visiting Fellow in the Department of Library and Information Science, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, West Bengal, under RUSA PMU 2.0.

Jadavpur University is among the country’s most prestigious, reputed, and top-ranked institutions. Being invited to serve as a Visiting Fellow at such a distinguished university is a matter of great pride and a reflection of Prof. Verma’s significant academic contributions and expertise.
Prof. Verma will undertake this prestigious academic assignment from 13 August to 18 August 2026.

Prof. Laltluangliana Khiangte Award – Cheque Presentation Ceremony

On 13 August 2026, Professor Laltluangliana Khiangte presented a cheque of Rs. 400,000 to Dr. Zoramdinthara, Head of the Department of Mizo, Mizoram University, as the fund for the Prof. Laltluangliana Khiangte Award.

Dr. Zoramdinthara, who received the cheque on behalf of the Department of Mizo, expressed his happiness that the department had received such substantial financial support. He said the award would greatly motivate students and promote healthy and fair academic competition among them.

Speaking about the purpose of the fund, Prof. Laltluangliana Khiangte said that the award was established to promote academic excellence in the Mizo language and literature, encourage students to achieve high academic standards, and foster healthy academic competition among students.

The award shall be given to students of M.A. (Mizo) at Mizoram University who have successfully completed their M.A. (Mizo) degree and secured the highest marks in the M.A. (Mizo) final examination. If more than one student secures the highest marks, the award shall be shared equally among them. The award will consist of a cash prize generated from the interest earned on the principal fund.

Prof. Laltluangliana Khiangte was one of the pioneers instrumental in the establishment of the Department of Mizo at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU). When the M.A. (Mizo) programme was introduced in 1997, he joined the department as a Guest Lecturer. In 1999, he was promoted to Reader and became the first Head of the Mizo Department. After nearly four decades of dedicated service in higher educational institutions, he retired as Senior Professor and Dean, School of Humanities and Languages, on superannuation in June 2026.

Mizoram University today celebrated National Librarian’s Day on 12th August, 2026, with a special programme organised to commemorate the 134th birth anniversary of Padma Shri Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, the Father of Library Science in India. The programme was held at the Computer Room, Central Library, Mizoram University.

Dr. Lallaisangzuali, Librarian, Central Library, Mizoram University delivered the keynote address, highlighting Dr. Ranganathan’s pioneering contributions to librarianship.

The event underscored the vital role of libraries in education, research and knowledge dissemination.

The celebration brought together faculty members, library professionals, students and staff in a collective tribute.

Amit Kumar Bal Selected as Inlaks-Ravi Sankaran Grantee 2026

Amit Kumar Bal, a Ph.D. scholar under the supervision of Prof. H.T. Lalremsanga in the Department of Zoology, Mizoram University, has been selected as one of the 2026 Inlaks-Ravi Sankaran Grantees for Field Biology, Ecology and Conservation.

A wildlife researcher from Cuttack, Odisha, Bal currently serves as Project Coordinator (Mizoram) for Project Neofelis with S.P.E.C.I.E.S. Since 2019, he has conducted intensive field research in Murlen National Park, focusing on the ecology and conservation of clouded leopards, Asiatic golden cats, marbled cats and other elusive carnivores in the Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot.

His work integrates scientific research with community-based conservation. He has documented the first photographic record of the Spotted Linsang in Mizoram and contributed to the description of the snake 'Herpetoreas Murlen'. He is also a wildlife documentary filmmaker highlighting the biodiversity of Murlen National Park and Lengteng Wildlife Sanctuary.

With the Inlaks–Ravi Sankaran Grant, Bal will develop a community-based human–dhole coexistence programme aimed at reducing livestock depredation while conserving the endangered dhole (Cuon alpinus). The project will identify conflict hotspots, implement mitigation measures, and build local capacity through awareness programmes and training for NGOs, Forest Department staff, educational institutions and community leaders.

The Inlaks-Ravi Sankaran Grant supports early-stage projects that can lead to longer-term conservation science and implementation efforts in India.

The Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management in collaboration with the DST-funded Technology Enabling Centre (TEC), Mizoram University, inaugurated the Six-Day Online Advanced Research Methodology Workshop on "Transforming Academic Research Outputs into Patents, Copyrights, Products and Services." The workshop was held on 10 August 2026, and attracted 150 participants, including faculty members, research scholars, and postgraduate students from universities and higher educational institutions across India. The programme aims to strengthen research capabilities while promoting innovation, intellectual property creation, technology transfer, and commercialization of academic research outcomes.

The inaugural programme commenced with a welcome address by Dr Pankaj Kumar, Head of the Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management, Mizoram University, who welcomed the Chief Guest, Prof. Vanlalchhawna, Dean, School of Economics, Management and Information Sciences (SEMIS), distinguished guests, faculty members, and participants. He emphasized the importance of sound research methodology in tourism, management, and the humanities for addressing contemporary societal challenges and achieving sustainable development.

Dr Rajesh R, Workshop Coordinator, presented the scope of the programme, highlighting that the workshop is designed to bridge the gap between academic research and practical outcomes such as patents, copyrights, technologies, products, and services. Dr Lalhmingliana Renthlei, Coordinator of the Technology Enabling Centre, introduced the mission of the DST-funded TEC, MZU, emphasizing its role in connecting academia, industry, entrepreneurs, and local communities to translate research into technologies that address regional challenges.

Delivering the chief address, Prof. Vanlalchhawna underscored the importance of research, development, and innovation in national growth. He encouraged researchers to move beyond publications by generating patents, technologies, products, and services that solve real-world problems. Highlighting initiatives such as Startup India, he urged participants to strengthen linkages with the MSME sector and contribute to entrepreneurship and societal development through impactful research.

The six-day workshop features lectures and hands-on training by eminent experts from leading institutions across the country, including Prof. L. S. Sharma (Mizoram University), Prof. Kasilingam (Pondicherry University), Dr Thiyagu (Central University of Karnataka), Dr Ganesh Kumar (Central University of Hyderabad), Dr Pankaj Vishwakarma (IIM Visakhapatnam), Dr Ramswarup Bhaskar (IIM Jammu), Dr Muthupandian (Central University of Tamil Nadu), Dr Arun Raaza (VISTAS, Chennai), Dr Priyakrushna Mohanty (Christ University) and Dr Ranjit Singh (Baharampur University). Participants will receive intensive training in systematic literature review, bibliometric analysis, science mapping, meta-analysis, qualitative and quantitative data analysis, Structural Equation Modelling (SEM), artificial intelligence tools for research, intellectual property rights, patents, copyrights, technology transfer, commercialization, and transforming research outputs into products and services.

The inaugural programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr Jacob L. Pulamte, Research Scholar, Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management, Mizoram University, who expressed gratitude to the Chief Guest, university authorities, resource persons, organizing committee, and participants for their enthusiastic support in making the workshop a successful beginning.

The Department of Mizo, Mizoram University, organised a Swachh Bharat Programme on 7th August, 2026.

As part of this initiative, faculty members and students jointly undertook a comprehensive cleanliness drive, during which the entire premises of the Department of Mizo—including classrooms, corridors, office spaces, and surrounding outdoor areas—were thoroughly cleaned and made significantly more hygienic and presentable.

The programme had a visible and transforming effect on the environment of the Department of Mizo, turning it into a cleaner, more organised, and more welcoming space that reinforced awareness of cleanliness and collective responsibility.

The drive witnessed highly active and enthusiastic participation from all students and faculty members, who worked in coordinated groups, systematically removing waste, clearing overgrown areas, and ensuring proper disposal of collected debris, thereby demonstrating strong commitment to the objectives of the Swachh Bharat mission.
