The Department of Planning and Architecture, Mizoram University, organized a five-day Online Workshop on “Research Methodology in Architecture and Planning” from 4th to 8th August 2025. Dr. Emeline Renthlei, Head of the Department, formally welcomed the participants and resource persons, while also providing a brief introduction to the department’s academic vision and activities. Prof. Vineet Shrivastava, Dean of the School of Fine Arts, Architecture and Fashion Technology (SFAA&FT), Mizoram University, outlined the objectives of the workshop and introduced the invited speakers. In the inaugural session, the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor highlighted the critical role of research in addressing day-to-day challenges of the built environment and emphasized the need for context-specific and innovative solutions.

The week-long deliberations brought together distinguished experts who offered participants both methodological insights and critical perspectives. Prof. Ajay Khare (Founding Director, SPA Bhopal; Fulbright and Charles Wallace Fellow) underscored that research extends beyond the search for solutions, stressing instead the significance of framing meaningful and thought-provoking questions. Prof. (Dr.) Roopal Deshpande demonstrated the analytical potential of Space Syntax tools such as DepthmapX and Agraph, illustrating how spatial configurations influence social, economic, and environmental dynamics. Prof. Pratap Raval (COEP Pune) expanded the discussion to scenario planning, highlighting stakeholder engagement and adaptive strategies for sustainable futures. Dr. Janmejoy Gupta (SPA Vijayawada) contributed technical insights on energy performance, passive design strategies, and simulation tools aimed at balancing human comfort with environmental responsibility. Dr. Faiz Ahmed Chundeli (SPA Vijayawada) emphasized the role of geospatial analysis and urban microclimate studies in fostering climate-responsive urban development. Dr. Rahul Shukla stressed the application of remote sensing and GIS for managing uncertainties, enabling participatory decision-making, and promoting resilient urban growth. Dr. Amit Shankar (IIM Visakhapatnam) delivered interactive sessions on Structural Equation Modelling (AMOS), enabling participants to develop hands-on expertise. Building on this, Prof. Vineet Shrivastava shared his own research experience in applying SEM in conjunction with geospatial technologies, while Dr. Kamini Sinha provided perspectives on integrating heritage conservation with innovation in sustainable design practices.
Collectively, the sessions underscored the importance of interdisciplinarity, data-driven methodologies, technical rigor, and humanistic values—encouraging participants to bridge theory and practice, reflect on historical contexts, and envision sustainable futures.

The workshop attracted 84 participants, including research scholars and faculty members from across India, and was widely appreciated for its intellectual depth and practical relevance. On the concluding day, Ms. Dwijomala Hanjabam presented a comprehensive report summarizing the five-day deliberations, followed by a formal vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Sachin Yadav.
