KERALA IS NOW OFFICIALLY “KERALAM”

A historic change has been formally completed as President Droupadi Murmu gave assent to the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026, paving the way for the State of Kerala to be officially known as Keralam.

Key Points

• The Kerala Legislative Assembly had unanimously sought the name change, arguing that “Keralam” is the name of the State in Malayalam.

• The Union Cabinet approved the proposal on 24 February 2026.

• The proposal followed the constitutional procedure laid down under Article 3 of the Constitution of India.

• Parliament subsequently passed the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026.

• President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent to the Bill on 14 August 2026.

• The change alters the State’s official constitutional name from Kerala → Keralam, bringing the English official name closer to the Malayalam കേരളം (Keralam).

Vande Mataram — from a song to a symbol of national awakening. 🇮🇳

Written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay and later immortalised through India’s freedom struggle, Vande Mataram became a powerful expression of love for the motherland, sacrifice, resistance and national unity.

From the 1896 Indian National Congress session to the Swadeshi Movement of 1905, its words inspired generations in the struggle against colonial rule.

More than a patriotic song, Vande Mataram became a voice of India’s freedom movement.

Vande Mataram! 🇮🇳
