Sakina Mir is the leader of the women’s group involved in creating beautiful bead jewellery, which has helped them create a sustainable employment opportunity.
✨✨
Mirs are a nomadic tribe community who travels across the fringes of the beautiful Thar and Kutch deserts. They are said to be descendants of Kashmir’s Butt tribe, which migrated into Gujarat. In other regions, they were known as the breeders of Kathi horses. And with mastery over Arabic, Urdu, Gujarati and Hindi, they became major influencers of poetry in the region.
✨
About 60 to 70 Mir tribe families live on the fringes of Little Rann of Kutch, in the village Dasada in Surendranagar district of Gujarat. families have no shelter or any sustainable sources of livelihood. They depend upon occasional agriculture labour or by working as village entertainers.
✨✨
But the Mirs are also known for one more handcrafted heritage: The beaded jewellery they handmade.
A couple of years ago, Eklavya Foundation and Soar Excursion, a company of passionate professional wildlife activists working for sustainable and responsible wildlife and cultural tourism, began working with the Mirs.
✨✨
About 30 women and young girls have been trained to create gorgeous bead jewellery —colourful bangles, anklets, earrings and other such accessories. These fashion accessories are sold to travellers to the Little Ran of Kutch, besides via various exhibitions and some stores in several urban markets.
✨✨
The lockdown enforced due to the COVID pandemic has pushed the community to the brink of starvation. They need urgent support for marketing their beautifully handcrafted beaded products, for purchasing raw materials and for meeting basic needs such as food, health care and children’s nutrition.
