The most patriotic day of the year is not the 15th of August. It's the 16th.
On the 14th, a boy sells paper flags at the signal. On the 15th, we wave them. And on the 16th morning, they're on the road — under our tyres.
Last year, I watched an old sweeper stop her broom, bend down, and gather them. One by one.
Nobody was filming her. Nobody had told her that patriotism has a date.
So let me wish you what nobody ever wishes.

This 15 August, declare independence. But not the kind you think.
Nobody colonises your English today — except your own fear.
Four freedoms to claim:

- TRANSLATION. Stop composing in your mother tongue and converting. Think directly in English, even imperfectly. Fluency begins where translation ends.
- APOLOGY. "Sorry, my English is not that good" — never open with a surrender. Nobody hears your grammar as loudly as they hear your confidence.
- THE ACCENT MYTH. The standard is not British or American. The standard is clarity. Precision beats imitation, every single time.
- SILENCE. The meeting where you knew the answer and said nothing — that silence has a cost. Your voice belongs in the room.

Fear leaves the way it came. One small act of courage at a time.

14th August, 1947. A few minutes before twelve. The Empire has hours left to live. In the Constituent Assembly, a man rises — and chooses to declare India's freedom in English. The language of the Empire that is leaving.

"Long years ago, we made a tryst with destiny…"

Tryst. Not promise. Not appointment. A tryst is a secret meeting between lovers. (…) He called India's date with freedom a love story.

Why English, that night? Because he was not speaking to India alone. He was speaking to the world — in the world's language — better than the world spoke it.

So the next time you hesitate before speaking English — remember midnight. This language is not a colonial leftover. It is a spoil of freedom. You inherited it as a victor. (…) Own it like one. Happy Independence Day.

London's finest critics called her one of the best English poets alive. She used that fame to fight their Empire.
They named her the Nightingale of India, printed her poems, applauded her in their drawing rooms. Then the Nightingale turned — Congress stages, prison cells, and the first Indian woman to lead the Indian National Congress.
She mastered their language so completely they had no choice but to listen. And then she said one thing. Leave.
Master the language. Then say what you came to say.

Gandhi wrote to Viceroys in flawless English and opened with "Dear friend" — no ornament, no anger, sentences too clear to twist and too calm to dismiss. His power was never eloquence. It was clarity.

Which is why clarity still wins the room — in 1891, and in your next meeting.

When did you last take a real pause?

We are always running — deadlines, meetings, responsibilities. But rest is not a reward you earn after the race. It is what keeps you in it.

Here's my gentle reminder: you don't need a long holiday. You need a pause. A hill station. A quiet lake. A winding road.

For me, that's Mount Abu — the closest hill station to Ahmedabad. Go in the morning, return by night. Waterfalls on the way, a boat across Nakki Lake, sunset at Toad Rock.

Wherever you are, find your Mount Abu. Take that break. You've earned it.
