We cordially invite you to Itiha: stories and traditions of vernacular furniture, a virtual exhibition on a collaborative research project ‘Vernacular Furniture of North-West India’.
Vernacular furniture is used in the everyday life of people of a particular region or community and is made by craftspeople using locally available materials. The exhibition focuses on the six year long journey about the research on the vernacular furniture of north-west India and highlights aspects of design, function, making, as well as associated stories and narratives that signify its relevance in a given context. The exhibition is an outcome of the ‘Vernacular Furniture of North-West India’ project, which is the first ever research on vernacular furniture.
About the project:
The project ‘Vernacular Furniture of North-West India’ project was initiated in December 2015. It aimed at identifying, mapping, documenting and studying vernacular furniture that has traditionally been, and continues to be an inherent part of the day-to-day life in an Indian household. North-West India covers the states of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana.
The research was executed in three stages:
Phase I: Gujarat, Phase II: Rajasthan and Phase III: Punjab and Haryana
