Visit of student to IPR!!!
On 25th August 2025, the students of Classes XI and XII Science of Airport School, Ahmedabad, had the opportunity to visit the Institute for Plasma Research (IPR), Gandhinagar, Gujarat. The objective of this educational tour was to provide students with insights into the cutting-edge research in plasma physics and its role in the future of sustainable energy.
During the visit, the scientists at IPR delivered a highly engaging and informative session. They began by explaining the fundamental concepts of plasma in a very simplified manner, using real-life analogies and interactive models. The explanations helped students relate abstract scientific concepts to practical applications and encouraged them to think critically and creatively.
One of the highlights of the tour was viewing the model of the Aditya Tokamak, a torus-shaped device designed to trap and study plasma using powerful magnetic fields. The students learned about the process of creating extremely high temperatures—comparable to the core of the sun—inside the Tokamak. At the same time, they were shown how superconductors are cooled down to temperatures as low as -269°C using liquid helium, and how near-vacuum conditions are maintained inside the machine, mimicking outer space.
Key Learnings from the Visit:
• Plasma constitutes approximately 99.99% of the visible universe and exhibits different colours depending on the gas used.
• The concept of fusion energy, a clean and sustainable energy source for the future, was well-demonstrated.
• Students also learned about India’s vital contribution to the global ITER project, particularly in the manufacturing of the cryostat, a critical component of the fusion reactor.
• Applications of plasma in diverse fields such as medicine, textiles, electronics, and environmental science were discussed.
• The Q&A session was especially valuable, allowing students to clarify their doubts and explore the subject in greater depth.
The visit proved to be an eye-opening experience for the students. It not only enhanced their understanding of plasma physics but also sparked curiosity about future careers in scientific research and technology. The interaction with scientists and the exposure to real-world scientific infrastructure has undoubtedly left a lasting impression on our students.
In conclusion, the educational trip to IPR was both enriching and inspiring. We are thankful to the IPR team for their hospitality and for making complex scientific concepts accessible and exciting for young minds.
