Haobam Paban Kumar is an Indian filmmaker from Manipur. His films and documentaries have been screened in several places across the globe.
Kumar's debut feature film Loktak Lairembee (Lady of the Lake) won the National Film Award for Best Film on Environment Conservation/Preservation at the 64th National Film Awards 2017. He also won the German Star of India at the 14th Indian Film Festival in Stuttgart, Germany for the film in 2017.

A film banned in its home country Iran, Dayereh (The Circle) traces the lives of four women through the streets of Tehran. Each of the stories are interconnected to each other, as one soon learns that most of these women have been imprisoned at some point or another. For what crimes, the viewer is never told. Throughout the film, Panahi highlights the multiple everyday aspects of these womens' lives that are controlled by the patriarchal and oppressive state. The film is a profound, critical depiction of modern Iranian society where despite the odds, these women strive for their freedom, through the sheer force of their courage and resilience.

Jafar Panahi commented on the genesis of the film "One day I noticed a small article in the newspaper: 'A woman committed su***de after killing her two young daughters.' There was nothing about the reasons behind the crime or su***de. Perhaps the newspaper did not see any need, since in many communities, women are most deprived. Their freedom is limited to the point it seems as if they are in a big prison. This is not only true for a particular class of women, but for all of them. As if each woman could replace another in a circle." The film has won several awards, including the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 2000.
