The Gujarati New Year is celebrated the first day after Diwali! The New Year indicates a new beginning and new hopes and aspirations.
The New Year is celebrated by visiting the temples in the morning and meeting relatives and friends with a good amount of sweets. Elders hand over money to children as blessings and bless them for success and happiness. The New Year is all about love, happiness and family time.

Diwali is also known as the festival of lights. It symbolises the victory of Knowledge over Ignorance and is celebrated by lighting earthen lamps called diyas and praying to Goddess Laxmi for the good fortune of Family, relatives and friends. This is the time when families visit each other and enjoy their togetherness.

Dhanteras is the worship of lord Dhanvantari. On Dhanteras, homes that have not yet been cleaned in preparation for Diwali are thoroughly cleansed and whitewashed, and Lord Dhanvantari, the god of health and Ayurveda, is worshiped in the evening. The main entrance is decorated with colorful lanterns, holiday lights and traditional motifs of Rangoli designs are made to welcome the Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity.
On the night of Dhanteras, diyas (lamps) are ritually kept burning all through the night in honor of Lakshmi and Dhanvantari.
Many People consider this an extremely auspicious day for making new purchases, especially of gold or silver articles and new utensils. It is believed that new "Dhan" (wealth) or some item made of precious metal is a sign of good luck.
