*Feeding is much broader than oral-motor skills.*

Oral-motor function is only one component of feeding.

A more accurate framework is:

*Postural & motor skills* – head/trunk stability, sitting, reaching, hand-to-mouth coordination

*Oral-motor skills* – jaw, lip, tongue and chewing movements

*Sensory processing* – response to texture, temperature, taste, smell, touch and visual presentation

*Feeding skills* – sucking, biting, chewing, bolus formation and swallowing

*Mealtime behaviour* – refusal, food selectivity, distress, attention and participation

*Self-feeding* – utensil use, cup drinking, finger feeding and independence

*Communication & interaction* – expressing hunger/fullness, requesting food and social participation

*Gastrointestinal/medical factors* – reflux, constipation, allergies/intolerances, pain, etc.

*Environmental factors* – seating, utensils, mealtime routine and caregiver interaction

*Nutrition* – adequacy, variety, growth and nutritional needs

So instead of saying “Feeding Therapy = Oral Motor Therapy,” it is better to say:

Feeding therapy is a multidisciplinary intervention addressing the sensory, motor, oral, behavioural, nutritional, medical and environmental factors that influence a child’s ability to eat safely, adequately and functionally.

And oral-motor therapy may be one part of a feeding intervention—not the entire feeding intervention.

*Why Children with developmental & Neurological conditions Benefit from combination of Sensory Integration Therapy and Behaviour Therapy*

Many children with neurodevelopmental conditions, such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), ADHD, developmental delay, cerebral palsy, or sensory processing challenges, may benefit from both Sensory Integration (SI) Therapy and Behaviour Therapy because they address different yet complementary aspects of a child's development.

Sensory dysregulation may contribute to behaviours such as meltdowns, avoidance, self-injurious behaviours, aggression, anxiety, or difficulty participating in everyday activities.

Sensory Integration Therapy aims to improve the brain's ability to process, organize, and respond appropriately to sensory information, thereby enhancing self-regulation, motor planning, attention, and participation in meaningful daily activities.

Behaviour Therapy focuses on understanding the function of behaviour and uses evidence-based strategies to teach communication, adaptive behaviours, social skills, emotional regulation, and functional independence while reducing behaviours that interfere with learning and participation.

Since sensory processing difficulties and behavioural challenges often coexist, addressing only one aspect may not fully meet the child's needs.

Within a multidisciplinary, family-centred rehabilitation programme, integrating Sensory Integration Therapy and Behaviour Therapy allows professionals to develop individualized interventions that address both neurological processing and functional behavioural outcomes, maximizing participation and quality of life.
