Apollo 13: A Successful Failure, Conversation with Astronaut Fred Haise
Grades 2-12
We are very excited to host Fred Haise, one of the three astronauts for the Apollo 13 mission.
Fred Haise began his aviation career as a U.S. Marine Corps pilot before transitioning to civilian roles as a flight instructor and research pilot. He later worked as a test pilot for NASA, contributing to various aeronautical research programs, which showcased his exceptional piloting skills. His extensive experience in high-risk flight operations led to his selection as an astronaut in 1966, ultimately serving as the Lunar Module Pilot on Apollo 13.
The 1970 Apollo 13 mission was a failed attempt to land humans on the Moon due to an explosion that severely damaged the spacecraft, but it was considered a "successful failure" because of the capabilities demonstrated by the crew and thousands of people across the world that collaborated to return the crew safely to Earth. We are fortunate to have as our special guest speaker, Fred Haise (NASA research pilot, Apollo 13 Lunar Module Pilot and Commander of the first Space Shuttle orbiter Enterprise) to share his personal experience and stories from his lunar and space shuttle missions along with his insights of the human spaceflight program, as Artemis attempts to return people to the Moon over 55 years after Apollo 13. Fred lives in Houston, Texas USA.
We will prepare questions for Fred together and send them to him in advance. All students who are interested in asking Fred a question should watch this video. Do comment with the questions you have to ask.
