In a landmark move aimed at improving transparency and accountability, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has announced that the provisional answer key for the Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026 will be released immediately after the exam concludes on May 24, 2026.
For the first time, candidates will be able to challenge the provisional answer key through the Online Question Paper Representation Portal (QPRep) on the UPSC website. The objection window will remain open till 6:00 PM on May 31, 2026. Candidates filing objections must submit a brief explanation along with evidence from three authentic sources. All objections will be reviewed by subject experts before the final answer key is published.
UPSC Chairman Ajay Kumar called the move a “new beginning” focused on transparency, faster communication, and greater accountability towards aspirants.
The reform is expected to bring major relief to over five lakh candidates who appear for the Preliminary Examination every year. Aspirants had long demanded early access to answer keys so they could assess their performance and plan their preparation strategy without waiting for the final results.
The Commission has also introduced AI-based face authentication at examination centres to prevent impersonation and the use of dummy candidates. Candidates with disabilities will now receive centres based on their preferred venue choices.
Additionally, candidates already appointed to the IAS or IFS will not be eligible for CSE-2026. Those appointed after the prelims stage but before the mains examination will also be barred from appearing in the mains.
UPSC has reiterated that entry gates will close 30 minutes before each session, and only black ballpoint pens must be used for filling OMR sheets. Mobile phones, watches, and electronic gadgets will remain prohibited inside examination halls.
