Our universe has *a lot* more than just three states of matter. Here's just some of the others we know about.
Most of us learn about the three basic states of matter — solid, liquid, and gas — but the universe has far more to offer.
Beyond these familiar forms, there’s plasma, the fourth state, which occurs when gases are energized enough to free electrons, creating an electrically charged soup found in stars and lightning.
Then there's Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), a state achieved at temperatures near absolute zero, where atoms clump together and behave as a single quantum entity — essentially acting like one "super-atom."
Other exotic states include fermionic condensates, quark-gluon plasma (believed to have existed moments after the Big Bang), and time crystals, a recently discovered phase of matter that seems to move in a repeating cycle without using energy.
Then there are superfluids and supersolids — and that's still just scratching the surface. Scientists say there are many we've yet to discover.
