M.Tech in Geomatics is a multi-disciplinary professional 2-year Post Graduate Course at CEPT Univers M.
GEOMATICS, popularly known as Geo-Informatics refers to the mathematics, science and technology used to study spatial information. It is a field with ancient roots, modern relevance, and an eye to the future. This technology is being incorporated into a wide range of engineering, management and decision-making operations. The technologically enriched course offers discipline neutral subjects for s
tudents from a multi-disciplinary background, to cater smart and sustainable decision making in various applications of a built habitat. M.Tech in Geomatics is a multi-disciplinary professional course wherein advanced subjects like Remote Sensing, GIS, Database Management Systems, Spatial Data analysis, Machine Learning algorithms, Programming languages, Photogrammetry, GPS and Location Based Systems , Big-data analytics, Web and Mobile GIS, Open Source technologies, Project Planning and Geo-visualization are taught. It gives a unique opportunity to explore the wide applications in multidisciplinary fields of Engineering, Information Technology, Architecture, Construction, Infrastructure, Utilities, Environment, Planning, Management, and Governance. The program emphasizes on theory, practical applications through hands-on exercises, studio (real-time case studies) and independent dissertation. Faculty members are drawn from scientific and academic institutions, experienced professionals with in-depth theoretical and practical knowledge who bring applied experience to the classroom. A wide exposure and encouragement to be a part of rich knowledge exchange programs such as national and international seminars, workshops and summer schools pertaining to the Geospatial industry, have remained a key strength of the program over the years, since its inception at CEPT University in 1987. Tech in Geomatics at CEPT University, is augmented with cutting edge courses with latest technologies and applications for natural and built environment. CEPT University cherishes the individual interests and abilities of its students and helps them chart their own academic pathways while keeping focus on the main program and individual area of interest. With the increasing awareness and need of decision making through Information Technology, graduates from the M.Tech Geomatics program can build their careers with government bodies and organizations, corporate houses, NGOs, academic and research organizations. Our students have been successfully placed nationally and internationally, while many have also been successful in starting and establishing a consultancy firm for providing Geo-spatial solutions. A study on the prediction of flood and its extent of inundation in the Brahmaputra River's floodplains was conducted by Briksha Borna as part of studio coursework in the second semester.
The model estimates a 100-year rainfall intensity of 7.85 mm/h (2025), forecasting extensive flooding affecting 2285.87 km². By comparing SAR and HEC-RAS outputs, the project identifies vulnerable villages, enhancing disaster preparedness and supporting sustainable development in flood-prone regions.

A study on forest cover change prediction for Sanjay Gandhi National Park was conducted by Nishi Patel as part of studio coursework in the second semester.
By analyzing past land use land cover changes and using spatial variables such as proximity to roads, proximity to settlements, proximity to streams, slope, aspect, etc., the study identifies probable areas that might undergo deforestation by 2032.

A study on urban growth prediction for Surat was conducted by Shubham More as part of studio coursework in the second semester. By analyzing Landsat imagery from 2010, 2020, and 2025, it models land use and land cover changes to simulate fut ure urban ex- pansion up to 2035. Results show a projected increase of 10% in the builtup area from 2025 to 2035.

A study on assessing desertification and mapping its spatial extent was conducted by Satyam Jha as part of the first semester studio on Geospatial Technologies: Fundamentals.
The project analyzes desertification trends from 2013 to 2023 for Giridih district using remote sensing techniques, highlighting critical zones vulnerable to land degradation.
A study on Drought Analysis of Jalna District was conducted by Vaishnavi Harne as a part of her first semester studio on Geospatial Technologies: Fundamentals.
She performed a temporal analysis using weighted overlay methods to map drought vulnerability for the years 1998, 2010, and 2022, based on parameters like water content, temperature, vegetation health, rainfall, and slope.
We are excited to announce the winners of the Mapping Challenge, held on 22nd March 2025 as part of the GeoQuest event at CEPT University.
GeoQuest was designed to engage students and professionals in hands-on GIS mapping, spatial analysis, and real-world problem-solving through an interactive competition. Participants explored "Understanding the City Using Maps," showcasing their analytical skills and creativity in geospatial applications.
Winners:
First Place: Mahi Patel – PhD Scholar, Silver Oak University
Second Place: Kritika – MUI, CEPT University
Third Place: Surabhi Verma – MUP, CEPT University
A big congratulations to all the winners and participants for their enthusiasm and innovative solutions! Thank you for making GeoQuest a success.
