Finkelstein Reaction (CBSE Class 12)

Finkelstein reaction is a halogen exchange reaction in which an alkyl chloride or alkyl bromide is converted into an alkyl iodide by heating with sodium iodide (NaI) in dry acetone.

The Borodin–Hunsdiecker reaction is a decarboxylation reaction in which the silver salt of a carboxylic acid reacts with bromine (Br₂) to form an alkyl bromide containing one carbon less than the original acid.

Wurtz Reaction
Definition:
The Wurtz reaction is an organic reaction in which two molecules of an alkyl halide react with sodium metal in the presence of dry ether to form a higher alkane.
General Reaction:

R = Alkyl group
X = Halogen (Cl, Br, I)
Example:
(Bromomethane) → (Ethane)
Conditions
✔ Sodium metal (Na)
✔ Dry ether as solvent
✔ Alkyl halides (preferably primary)
Uses
Preparation of higher alkanes from lower alkyl halides.
Carbon–carbon bond formation.
Limitation
When two different alkyl halides are used, a mixture of alkanes is formed, making product separation difficult.

Wurtz reaction is used to prepare symmetrical alkanes containing an even number of carbon atoms.
