People across the world will celebrate World Blood Donor Day, commonly known as 'WBDD', on June 14 every year to raise awareness about safe blood donations and to thank those who donate blood voluntary and save the lives of others. It was first celebrated on the birthday anniversary of Karl Landsteiner -- a scientist who won the Nobel Prize for his discovery of the ABO blood group system -- on June 14, 1868.

World Blood Donor Day or the WBDD is one of the eight days -- along with World No To***co Day, World Health Day, World Immunization Week, World Malaria Day, World Tuberculosis Day, World Hepatitis Day and World AIDS Day -- that is marked by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as a "global public health campaign".
The theme for this year’s World Blood Donor Day is “Safe blood saves lives” with the slogan “Give blood and make the world a healthier place”.

Every Blood Donor is a Hero

The United Nations celebrates World Oceans Day every year on 8 June. Many countries have celebrated this special day since 1992, following the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, held in Rio de Janeiro.

In 2008, the United Nations General Assembly decided that, as of 2009, 8 June would be designated by the United Nations as “World Oceans Day”.

Every year the theme of this day is different.
