Sikh Scientist Breaks Thomas Edison’s Record!

Gurtej Sandhu, born in Amritsar, has made sikh community proud by becoming the world’s seventh top inventor, holding 1,382 US patents-surpassing even the legendary Thomas Edison, who had 1,093 patents.

Currently serving as Senior Fellow and Vice President at Micron Technology, Gurtej’s innovations in semiconductors, atomic layer deposition, and chip fabrication have enabled smaller, faster, and more powerful devices like smartphones, cameras, and cloud systems.

Educated at IIT Delhi and Guru Nanak Dev University, and later earning a PhD in the US, Gurtej’s journey from India to global innovation leader is truly inspiring.

His work has won multiple awards, including the IEEE Andrew S Grove Award in 2018, and continues to influence the world of microelectronics.

The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi for their pioneering discoveries on peripheral immune tolerance. Their remarkable work revealed how the immune system maintains harmony and prevents autoimmune attacks — a breakthrough that reshaped modern immunology.

🔬 Why it matters:
They discovered the crucial role of regulatory T cells (Tregs) — the immune system’s peacekeepers that prevent self-destruction.

Their research uncovered how mutations in the FOXP3 gene impair Treg function, leading to autoimmune diseases.

These insights are now the foundation for advanced therapies in autoimmune disorders, cancer immunotherapy, and organ transplantation.

💬 Dr. Sakaguchi said he hopes the discovery will continue to inspire translational research and help millions affected by immune-related diseases.

🏅 The laureates will share 11 million Swedish kronor and receive the Nobel medals at the ceremony hosted by the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm.
