*Holy Public Girls School*
*Activity topic:* Process of electrolysis
*Date:* 18/4/26
*Standard:* Class VIII (A+B)

*Purpose:* To enable students to understand the process of electrolysis and how water decomposes into oxygen and hydrogen gas.

*Significance:* During electrolysis, electrical energy breaks the molecular bonds of water, decomposing it into hydrogen and oxygen. Hydrogen gas (H₂) forms at the negative cathode through reduction, while oxygen gas (O₂) forms at the positive anode through oxidation. This reaction produces hydrogen and oxygen in a 2:1 volume ratio.

*Activity description:* Electrolysis decomposes water into hydrogen and oxygen by passing direct current (DC) through water using two electrodes—anode (positive) and cathode (negative)—placed in water with an electrolyte such as salt or acid to allow ion flow. Hydrogen forms at the cathode as water gains electrons, while oxygen forms at the anode as water loses electrons. Twice the volume of hydrogen is produced compared to oxygen.

*Learning outcome:* Students gained a deeper understanding of the process of electrolysis.
