Zippori Excavations 2017

Zippori Excavations 2017 The Hebrew University expedition has been active at Sepphoris from 1985 and has excavated most of the buildings visible today at the site.

Sepphoris is the historic capital of Galilee, was a multi-cultural center dating from the Iron age to the Ottoman period. Second-Temple period Sepphoris, constructed on its hill and slope, featured simple buildings lacking all airs of monumentality. Early in the second century CE, the city spread considerably eastward, boasting an impressive grid of streets with a colonnaded cardo and decumanos ru

nning through its center. Various public buildings were built in the city, including a Roman temple, a forum, bathhouses, a theater, and a library or archive, as well as churches, synagogues. The city is renowned for its multiple colorful mosaics, adorning both public and private buildings.
