BAH (Bad Hebrew Advice): "Just go to Kupat Holim for dental care, it’s cheaper." 🦷

Well, actually, that’s not Hebrew advice—but it is definitely bad advice.

How are my teeth? Good genetics, no question. But after trying both Kupat Holim and private clinics, I can tell you without a doubt: don't trust the public system with your teeth. Why? Because public healthcare doesn't pay its medical staff properly. The result? Zero available appointments, a 15-minute rush job for a cleaning, and if something goes wrong? אפשר לחפש את החברים שלנו, as we say.

If you’ve read this far, you’re probably wondering: what does this have to do with Hebrew?

It’s the exact same logic with an Ulpan. If you are an Oleh, get a voucher, and choose a free, crowded public Ulpan, you get exactly what you (don't) pay for.

At UAB, I promise you something completely different:

True personal attention (yes, I will check if you did your homework).

Weekly tracking of your progress, both in our vocabulary app and in real life.

No slacking—if you drop off, you're getting a message from me.

Just like taking care of your teeth, the road to real fluency requires the right investment. The private Ulpan way—the UAB way—is the only way that actually works.

Spaces for our summer semester are filling up fast. Drop me a message, and let’s get you fluent. 💬

BHA (Bad Hebrew Advice): Why Do You Need Exams to Learn Hebrew?

Honestly, why do people insist on putting themselves through the trauma of language exams? We’re adults here. We left school years ago. If you want to actually enjoy your life and protect your peace, here is my official bad advice on why you should run away from anyone trying to test you:

-Trust your "feeling" over facts: Why let a written and oral exam act like a mirror and show you what you *actually* know? That just ruins the vibe. It's much better to live in a comfortable bubble where you assume you're fluent because you managed to order a coffee without the barista switching to English.

- Consistency is overrated: Without an exam at the end of a ten-week semester, let’s be real—you aren’t opening a book. You aren't reviewing verb conjugations, and you definitely aren't memorizing vocabulary. And that’s fine! Who needs structure? Just wing it. Hebrew is all about improvisation anyway.

- Delegate your brain to an app: If you feel guilty about not studying, just open Duolingo or Memrise. Spending twenty minutes matching pictures of cats and apples is exactly the same as passing a rigorous professional evaluation, right? I’m sure that green owl will protect you when you're put on the spot in a real conversation.

- Avoid discomfort at all costs: If the prospect of a test gives you anxiety, just don't do it. Never mind that pushing through the stress and passing an exam actually proves you can handle the language under pressure. It's much safer to stay in your comfort zone where no one ever corrects your mistakes.

Look, if your ulpan or private tutor doesn't care enough to test your speaking and writing, enjoy the free ride. You can keep paying them to just nod and smile at your broken grammar.

But if you actually want to see real, undeniable progress? You face the exam, you get the mirror put in front of your face, and you do the work.

Choose your path. Just don't say I didn't warn you. 😉

Let’s talk about the elephant in the room: most Hebrew teachers and ulpans have absolutely no clue how to teach verbs! 🤦‍♂️ Public ulpans (and even some private ones) just drill students' brains with formal grammar structures (Binyanim)—which are completely useless, especially for beginners and intermediate levels. On the flip side, some ulpans just skip verbs altogether! Like, how?! 🤷‍♂️ So, how do we do it at UAB? Enter the "Category Method"—a system I developed myself (yes, me, Aviv!) that takes the fear out of the equation, gives students total control over the language, and most importantly: gets them speaking fluently. Want a taste? Check out this video to see how we tackle one of our favorite verb categories in our A2 class. Stop hesitating. There’s only one choice—UAB! 🎯✨

From "Closet Talk" to Center Stage: The Fabulous World of Gay Slang in Hebrew 10/06/2026

🌈 From Closet Talk to Center Stage: The Fabulous World of Hebrew Gay Slang! 💅🏳️‍🌈

Ever felt like there’s a whole parallel universe of Hebrew that you didn’t learn in a traditional textbook? That’s because the most vibrant, expressive, and living parts of a language are born on the streets—and in Tel Aviv, the absolute crown jewel of modern Hebrew slang belongs to the LGBTQ+ community. 👑✨

What started decades ago as a secret code ("closet talk") to help community members safely identify each other has completely broken into mainstream Israeli culture. Today, from reality TV hosts to prime-time news, everyone is using it. But to speak it like a local, you need to understand the vibe!

Here are three essential terms you need to add to your vocabulary right now:

1️⃣ וודג׳ (Wadj) 🤨🤩

What it means: Face/Expression.

The Backstory: Borrowed from the Arabic word for face (Wajh).

How to use it: It’s all about the drama! If someone looks incredibly sour or grumpy, you whisper, "Eize Wadj..." 🍋 But if they walk into the room looking absolutely flawless and radiant? You shout, "Eize Wadj!" 🔥

2️⃣ לארד (Lared) 👑

What it means: A total ten, handsome, or gorgeous.

The Backstory: An iconic phonetic adaptation of the English word "Lord."

Pro-Tip: If you want to sound like a true insider, you string the variations together for ultimate emphasis: "Eize Lared, Eize Lird, Eize Loord!" 🗣️💅

3️⃣ מה איתוךְ (Ma itooch?) 🤔💬

What it means: "What's up with you?"

The Backstory: This is the ultimate linguistic flip. Even when talking directly to a man, speakers drop the masculine grammar and use the feminine suffix instead. It’s playful, affectionate, and adds instant rhythm to a conversation.

“Ma itooch?” — “Lo, ma itooch?!" 💁‍♂️✨

Language isn't just about memorizing cold grammar rules; it's about connection, humor, and culture. When you learn the slang, you aren't just learning how to speak—you're learning how to live the language.

From "Closet Talk" to Center Stage: The Fabulous World of Gay Slang in Hebrew At UAB, the first and only straight-friendly ulpan, we believe that language is a reflection of culture, identity, and belonging. Gay slang in Hebrew (“סלנג הומואי” or “שפה הומואית”) is a prime example of how language evolves to meet the needs of a community. Its history,...

Most Hebrew teachers are stuck in a cycle of boring drills and endless textbooks, but at UAB, we do things differently. After 17 years, I still get energized every single time I teach because we focus on living the language, not just reading it. Watch how my A2 class mastered body parts yesterday—no translation, no boredom, just pure immersion. If your learning experience feels mediocre, it’s time for a change.
