Biography

Meir (Michel) Levy was born in Paris, the oldest of 3 siblings. He grew up in the sixth district of Paris, a major hub of art galleries and one of the most fashionable districts of Paris. This milieu was the impetus for Meir’s interest in art, architecture and culture. When Meir was 8 years old, he immigrated to Israel with his family. People were attracted to his dr

awings and he received many enthusiastic remarks. When he was in high school, he was asked by his chemistry teacher to draw large-format molecular structures, an experience which led him to experiment with large drawings and paintings. After graduating high school, Meir served in the army in an infantry brigade. While in the army, his brother was killed in military action. This tragedy affected him greatly and he expressed his grief through his artwork. In time, however, he was able to return to his former cheerful and colorful painting style. Meir began his studies towards a degree in art, design and photography at the The Neri Bloomfield School of Design and Education (WIZO) in Haifa and won the Sharet Fund award (sponsored by the
America-Israel Cultural Foundation). After his graduation, he taught art and design for many years, all the while continuing to develop his artistic skills. Meir has exhibited his artwork in several countries, including Israel (Tel- Aviv), Belgium (Brussels) and Italy (Rome). Recently, he exhibited his work in Galerie Blumann which is located in Place des Vosges in Paris. In 2007 Meir realized his dream when he opened his own art gallery, Design 26, at 80 Ben Yehuda Street in Tel Aviv. Meir Levi's artwork is very colorful and powerful. He is an artist who combines a unique modern urban style with pop-art. Each artistic work in his gallery originates from objects that the artist first photographs and then modifies through painting, graffiti, reconstructing and processing in techniques that are uniquely his. Meir Levi's style is greatly influenced by his love of city life (such as Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Paris). Some of his works, for example, feature the Bauhaus buildings of Tel Aviv. However, Michel's style is also influenced by his love of nature. As a religious person, Michel believes that nature is God's first creation and he feels the need to express this in his artistic works. Some of his works depict Hassidic life, Judaic and Kabbalistic ideas and verses from the Book of Psalms.

Meir Levi’s style is greatly influenced by his love of city life (such as Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and Paris). Some of his works, for example, feature the Bauhaus buildings of Tel Aviv. However,Meir’s style is also influenced by his love of nature. As a religious person,Meir believes that nature is God’s first creation, and he feels the need to express this in his artistic works. Meir makes the link between abstract expressionism, graffiti, and color field with the holy spiritual ‘Kedusha.’ From the street to gallery walls, from Paris to Tel Aviv, graffiti has conquered the space of the canvas and entered into painting modern Jewish street art.
