לכבוד הקיץ שבא עלינו לטובה, על מקורה של המילה גלידה:
1. המילה מופיעה בצורה הארמית "גְּלִידָא" כמקבילה ל'כפור' בתרגום אונקלוס לפסוק "וַתַּעַל שִׁכְבַת הַטָּל [...] דַּק כַּכְּפֹר עַל-הָאָרֶץ" (שמות טז יד): "וּסְלֵיקַת נָחֲתַת טַלָּא [...] דַּעְדַּק דְּגִיר כִּגְלִידָא עַל אַרְעָא".
את המילה במשמעותה בעברית החדשה חידש אליעזר בן־יהודה. במילונו כתב: "יקראו בארץ־ישראל המדברים עברית ממתק עשוי מסֻכר וביצים ונקפא וקר כגליד". השורש המשנאי ג־ל־ד נבחר משום שעניינו קפיאה והתקשות (ראו הגליד, גלד וכולי). כמו כן, המילה נבחרה בשל הדמיון הצלילי שיש לה למילה האיטלקית שמשמעה גלידה – Gelato.
2. במסכת מקוואות בסדר טהרות במשנה כתוב "אלו מעלין את המקווה ולא פוסלין: השלג והברד והכפור והגליד...". המשנה מספקת רשימה של חומרים שניתן ליצור מקווה כשר בעזרתם. לצד השלג, הברד והכפור, מצוין גם הגליד.

In honor of the upcoming summer, here are few words about the origin of the word "GLIDA" (ice cream)
1. The word appears in the Aramaic form "Glyida" as an equivalent of frost in Onkelo's translation of the verse "When the dew was gone, thin flakes like frost on the ground appeared on the desert floor" (Exodus 16:14). The word in its new meaning (Ice cream) in modern Hebrew was renewed by Eliezer Ben Yehuda.
In his dictionary he wrote: "In Israel, those who speak Hebrew will call candy made of boiled eggs and frozen and cold as ice - GLIDA." The Mishnaic root was chosen because it was freezing and hardening (roughed, glade, etc.). Also, the word was chosen because of its similarity to the Italian word for ice cream - gelato.
2. In Tractate Mikvaot in the Seder of Taharot in the Mishna, it is written: "Those who feed the Mikveh do not rule out: the snow, the hail, the frost, and the ice ..." The Mishna provides a list of materials that can created a kosher Mikveh with their help. Along with the snow, the hail and the frost, the GLID (icicle) is mentioned too.
