Student Studies of the Model.

Over 25 years ago I painted my first works from life using a 3-color palette. Since then, I've been practicing this method consistently.
3-color paintings taught me more about color than any other palette. 13-color palettes taught me least.

First image is a still life from 2003 painted with Titanium white, black and Raw Umber. Second image is a seascape from 2015 done with White, Black and Burnt Sienna.

I am pleased to open a new Portrait Drawing Workshop next month! Like many, I am infected with the passion for drawing people. I am also keenly aware of the numerous challenges of this most human enterprise.

Over 5 intensive lessons of the workshop, I will teach to capture the individual likeness and the character of a person, be it a friend, relative, or any model of your choice. Through step-by-step demonstrations and lucid instructions I will teach effective methods of portrait drawing. The workshop will not only transform the participants' drawing abilities but will also lay a strong foundation for painting portraits in color.

For a century, there has been no standard of how art should look: a cultured museum goer often can’t tell whether the artwork he sees is good, bad, or if it’s an artwork at all.

Many of us, avoid discussing the failures or merits of art out of fear to sound unenlightened. But if there's no distinction and discussion of what's good and bad, why even bother looking at art?

Tomorrow, I will lecture on how to look at art. I will raise interesting and provocative questions about. I will offer ways to observe and evaluate art. Most importantly, this lecture will help you form profound personal relationships with artworks, which is the very essence of making art and looking at it.

How can we make captivating paintings? What is it that turns painting into a story that we want to experience again and again?
Accurate depiction of objects is just information, which does not amount to a story. These are painterly qualities that turn information into a narrative.

It is a natural human desire to draw and paint the human figure. But the challenges of anatomy, proportions and complex technique often leave us dissatisfied.

I designed my upcoming Figure Drawing Workshop to give everyone control over the process of figure drawing. I will show how to overcome technical challenges and to attain a sense of life, motion and expressiveness.

I will teach a range of drawing methods to capture the figure in short and long poses over the 8 sessions exhilarating sessions with live models.
