יש משהו יפה במיוחד כשבוגרת החוג חוזרת לכיתה – הפעם מהצד השני.

דנה סביר, בוגרת המסלול הישראלי בניהול מצבי חירום ואסון (מחזור 2016), התארחה השבוע בקורס Risk and Crisis Communication, בהובלתו של גילי שנהר Gili Shenhar, ושיתפה את הסטודנטים בתוכנית הבינלאומית מניסיונה בעבודה עם התקשורת בזמן אירועי חירום.

דנה היא עיתונאית ותיקה, שכיהנה כסגנית ראש מערכת החדשות של "Haaretz הארץ", וכיום מפיקה בישראל עבור רשת ABC News האמריקאית. במסגרת עבודתה עם הרשת הייתה שותפה לזכייה בשני פרסי International Emmy Awards.

בהרצאה היא דיברה על האתגרים של התקשורת הזרה בסיקור אירועי חירום בישראל ועל העבודה העיתונאית בזמן אמת, כשהצורך להעביר מידע במהירות פוגש את האחריות לדיוק.

עבור הסטודנטים זו הייתה הזדמנות להכיר את עולם התקשורת בחירום דרך מי שעוסקת בו בפועל – וגם לפגוש בוגרת שחזרה לחוג עם הניסיון המקצועי שצברה מאז סיום לימודיה.

There’s something special about seeing one of our alumni return to the classroom — this time as a guest speaker.

Dana Savir, a 2016 graduate of our Israeli MDM program, joined students in the International Program this week for a guest lecture as part of the Risk and Crisis Communication course, led by Gili Shenhar.

Dana is an experienced journalist who previously served as Deputy Head of the News Desk at Haaretz and currently works as a producer for ABC News in Israel. Her work with the network has contributed to coverage that received two Emmy Awards.

During the session, Dana spoke about the challenges of foreign media coverage during emergencies in Israel and shared insights from her own experience — including the challenge of reporting as events unfold, when information moves quickly but accuracy remains critical.

For our students, it was an opportunity to explore crisis communication through the experience of someone who deals with these challenges professionally — and to welcome an alumna back to the classroom, ten years after graduating.

ולריו קאראפה, בוגר המסלול הבינלאומי לתואר השני בניהול מצבי חירום ואסון באוניברסיטת תל אביב (מחזור 2021), פועל בימים אלה בוונצואלה כחלק מצוות החירום של IsraAID, המסייע לקהילות שנפגעו מרעידת האדמה.

במסגרת פעילות המשלחת, הצוות מסייע בהתקנת מערכות מים לשעת חירום, מעניק תמיכה נפשית ופסיכו־סוציאלית – במיוחד לילדים – מחלק ציוד הומניטרי ומבצע הערכות צרכים בשיתוף שותפים מקומיים ובינלאומיים.

בפוסט שפרסם מהשטח כתב:

"When disaster strikes, humanity knows no borders."

בהמשך הוא מתאר את המורכבות של העבודה ההומניטרית בשטח – מציאות שבה לוגיסטיקה, בריאות הציבור, בריאות הנפש, שותפויות והערכת צרכים אינם פועלים בנפרד, אלא כחלק ממערכת אחת. היכולת לראות את התמונה הרחבה, לעבוד בצוותים רב־תחומיים ולהתאים את המענה לצרכים המשתנים בשטח היא מה שעומד בלב העשייה בתחום ניהול מצבי החירום והאסון.

Valerio Carafa, a graduate of the International Master's in Disaster Management at Tel Aviv University (Class of 2021), is currently part of IsraAID's Emergency Response Team in Venezuela, supporting communities affected by the devastating earthquake.

The team is installing emergency water systems, providing mental health and psychosocial support—especially for children—distributing humanitarian aid, and conducting rapid needs assessments together with local and international partners.

In his update from the field, Valerio wrote:

"When disaster strikes, humanity knows no borders."

He goes on to describe the complexity of humanitarian response—a reality where logistics, public health, mental health, partnerships, and needs assessments are not separate activities, but parts of one integrated response. Seeing the bigger picture, working across disciplines, and adapting to rapidly changing needs on the ground are at the heart of effective emergency and disaster management.

Yesterday we celebrated the end of the academic year with the students of the International Master's in Disaster Management at the School of Public Health בית הספר לבריאות הציבור, Tel Aviv University - The Lowy International School.

Over the past year, this group has shared far more than classrooms. They learned together, completed internships, explored Israel, tackled real-world challenges, and built friendships and professional connections that span countries, cultures, and disciplines.

As they move on to the next stage of their professional journey, they also become part of a growing international community of alumni working across emergency management, public health, humanitarian response, and resilience.

כבר 20 שנה שהחוג לניהול מצבי חירום ואסון הוא הרבה יותר מתוכנית לימודים.

זו קהילה של בוגרות ובוגרים, סטודנטים, אנשי סגל ושותפים מקצועיים, שפועלים מדי יום במערכת הבריאות, במשרדי הממשלה, ברשויות המקומיות, בכוחות הביטחון, בארגוני החירום, בארגונים בינלאומיים, באקדמיה ובמגזר הפרטי.

ב־5 בנובמבר 2026 ניפגש כדי לציין יחד 20 שנה לחוג – להיפגש עם אנשים שלא ראינו שנים, להכיר את הדור החדש של החוג, לשמוע סיפורים מהשטח ולהסתכל גם קדימה.

"It started long before the five days it took us to arrive."

This is how Carolina Ratner, a 2023 graduate of the International Master's in Disaster Management at Tel Aviv University - The Lowy International School, describes the journey that led her to a humanitarian mission in .

For Carolina, the journey didn't begin with boarding a plane. It began years earlier—with youth leadership, psychology studies, volunteering with NATAN Worldwide Disaster Relief, and later with the International Master's in Disaster Management at Tel Aviv University.

She says that her first days in the field reinforced something she had been learning all along: resilience starts with people, and before taking action, you first need to build human connection.

As she puts it:

"Connection comes before action, and true resilience is about holding space for others".

הפעם – אביבית בקל Avivit Michael - bakal

לפני כמה שבועות, רעידת האדמה בוונצואלה הייתה עבור אביבית כותרת בחדשות. היום היא כבר שם.

אביבית, סטודנטית לתואר השני בניהול מצבי חירום ואסון באוניברסיטת תל אביב, משתתפת בימים אלה במשלחת הומניטרית של Early Starters International, הפועלת באזורים שנפגעו מרעידת האדמה.
הדרך שלה לשטח התחילה הרבה לפני הטיסה לוונצואלה – בהתנדבות, בלימודי פסיכולוגיה, במחקר על רעידות אדמה במסגרת התואר ובהקמת מיזם בתחום החילוץ וההצלה. בימים הראשונים לפעילות המשלחת, השתתפו הצוות במתן סיוע הומניטרי ובהקמת מרחבים בטוחים לילדים ולמשפחות שנפגעו מהאסון.

בפוסט שפרסמה רגע לפני היציאה למשלחת היא כתבה:

"It was always about people. But until now, what I had was models, data, and the testimonies of people who'd already been in the field. In two days, I'll be the one on the ground."

Members of the Department of Emergency & Disaster Management community at Tel Aviv University | אוניברסיטת תל-אביב are currently taking part in humanitarian missions in . Over the coming weeks, we'll be sharing some of their stories from the field.

First, Avivit Bakal.

Just a few weeks ago, the earthquake in Venezuela was something Avivit followed through the news. Today, she's there.

Avivit, a student in the Master's in Disaster Management at Tel Aviv University, is currently taking part in a humanitarian mission with Early Starters International in the areas affected by the earthquake.

Her journey to the field began long before the flight to Venezuela—with volunteering, psychology studies, research on vulnerability as part of her master's degree, and co-founding a search and rescue initiative.

During the first days of the mission, the team provided humanitarian assistance and helped create safe spaces for children and families affected by the disaster.

Before leaving for Venezuela, Avivit wrote:

"It was always about people. But until now, what I had was models, data, and the testimonies of people who'd already been in the field. In two days, I'll be the one on the ground."

We wish Avivit and the entire mission team a safe and meaningful mission.

תמיר ולנר Tamir Velner, דוקטורנט בחוג לניהול מצבי חירום ואסון באוניברסיטת תל אביב, העביר בשבוע שעבר הרצאה לחובשים ולפרמדיקים של מגן דוד אדום - Magen David Adom במסגרת כנס מנהיגות באסונות.

מחקרו של תמיר עוסק בחוסן ארגוני, ובהרצאתו התמקד בקשר שבין מנהיגות לבין היכולת של ארגונים לפתח ולשמר חוסן כזה.

אנחנו גאים לראות את המחקר שנעשה בחוג מגיע גם לאנשי המקצוע שפועלים בשטח.
