Stronger jet streams are expected to produce stronger storms. Yet every winter, the Atlantic experiences more intense storms than the Pacific, even though the Pacific jet stream is nearly twice as strong.

In a new study, Dr. Or Hadas and Prof. Yohai Kaspi from the EPS department Weizmann Institute of Science reveal the mechanism behind this long-standing atmospheric paradox. By combining 84 years of atmospheric reanalysis data with Lagrangian storm tracking, they show that the key is not only how strong the jet stream is, but also its orientation.

They found that Pacific storms quickly leave the region of strongest winds because the Pacific jet is oriented primarily east-west. In contrast, the tilted Atlantic jet keeps storms within favorable conditions for much longer, allowing them to extract more energy from the atmosphere, continue growing, and ultimately reach greater intensities.

The findings reconcile a decades-old discrepancy in atmospheric science and highlight the importance of tracking the life cycle of individual storms to better understand weather systems and improve projections of future climate.

PhD in Drone-Based Mapping of Urban and Rural Air Pollution
Research group: Prof. Yinon Rudich, https://www.weizmann.ac.il/EPS/Rudich/
Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Weizmann Institute of Science

We are seeking a motivated PhD candidate for an interdisciplinary project focused on developing and deploying advanced drone-based systems for high-resolution measurements of urban and rural air pollution. Air-pollution concentrations can vary substantially over short distances due to traffic, emissions, buildings, vegetation, and atmospheric processes. Conventional monitoring stations often cannot capture this variability. The project will combine drone measurements (in Israel and abroad), mobile ground platforms, advanced instrumentation, and machine learning to map pollution in three
dimensions and at high spatial and temporal resolution.

Research focus
A central part of the project will be the development of a field-ready drone measurement platform. The candidate will integrate lightweight sensors, sampling systems, positioning, data acquisition, and
operational protocols into a robust system for atmospheric research. The platform will be deployed together with an instrumented mobile vehicle to investigate fine-scale pollution patterns near the ground and throughout the lower atmosphere. The project will also develop machine-learning methods for spatial reconstruction, analysis, and short-term prediction. Field campaigns may take place in Israel and abroad, including potential deployments across Africa. The candidate will participate in the full research process, from system design and laboratory testing to field deployment, data analysis, and scientific publication.

Candidate profile
We are looking for a candidate with a background in atmospheric science, physics, engineering, computer science, or a related field. Experience with field measurements, Python, deep learning, drones, electronics, or scientific instrumentation is an advantage. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical skills, hands-on technical aptitude, curiosity about atmospheric processes, and an interest in combining measurement systems with data-driven modeling. Good communication skills, initiative, and the ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary team are essential.

Application
Please send a CV, a brief statement of research interests and relevant experience, and contact details for two references to [email protected]. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.

While many people are gathering to watch the World Cup these days, yesterday's screening was for something entirely different.
After seven years of research, members of Prof. Ilan Koren's research group at the Weizmann Institute of Science, together with colleagues from Prof. Yoav Schechner's group at the Technion, gathered to watch the launch of CloudCT, a joint project of the Weizmann Institute of Science, the Technion, and ZFT in Germany.
CloudCT is the first satellite in a planned constellation designed to create 3D maps of the internal structure and properties of clouds using tomography, a technology more commonly associated with medical imaging.
By capturing simultaneous images from multiple angles, the mission aims to provide new insights into cloud structure and improve our understanding of Earth's climate and global warming.
The countdown is over, now the mission begins.

How did the Dead Sea respond to past climate change?

The Dead Sea is one of the world's most valuable natural archives of climate history. By reconstructing its water levels over the past ~18,000 years, researchers can better understand how the climate of the Eastern Mediterranean has changed and what that may mean for the future.

In a new study, Jie Zhao, together with researchers in Dr. Yael Kiro's lab at the Weizmann Institute of Science, reconstructed ancient Dead Sea lake levels by combining pore-fluid magnesium concentrations from deep lake sediments with lake hypsometry. By accounting for uncertainties related to basin evolution and developing a dual magnesium inventory model that incorporates a deeper ancient south basin, they reconciled discrepancies between previous lake-level reconstructions and produced a more comprehensive history of Dead Sea levels since the last deglaciation.

The new reconstruction identifies three major drought periods, approximately 13.7, 11.7–11.3, and 8 thousand years ago. The study links these events to weakened Mediterranean winter cyclones caused by an intensified North Atlantic latitudinal sea surface temperature gradient following meltwater release events. During these droughts, freshwater discharge to the Dead Sea watershed is estimated to have fallen to just 30–50% of pre-1960 levels.

These findings highlight potential challenges for future water resource management in the populated southern Levant as the region is projected to become increasingly drought-prone under a warming climate.

Warm congratulations to Dr. Or Hadas of the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences Weizmann Institute of Science on receiving the 2026 Dimitris N. Chorafas Award for Outstanding PhD Students!

Named after engineer, researcher, and philanthropist Dimitris Chorafas, the award is presented annually to one outstanding doctoral student in the fields of science, engineering, and medicine at each participating research university, including leading institutions such as MIT, UCLA, and ETH. The award recognizes research of exceptional academic excellence and significant potential to advance scientific knowledge.

Or’s research focused on extratropical storms, the storms responsible for most extreme weather events outside the tropics, including those that affect Israel each winter. By tracking thousands of storms and analyzing their collective behavior, he bridged two major approaches to storm research: the meteorological approach, which focuses on individual storms, and the climate approach, which examines the statistical characteristics of storm activity.

His work revealed mechanisms underlying key climate paradoxes and led to the development of theoretical frameworks and machine-learning-based tools for studying storm behavior on large scales. These tools are expected to help climate scientists and meteorologists better understand the links between storm activity and the climate system, thereby bridging the gap between these two research perspectives.
