Who silences the alarms of the bacterial immune system?
The genomes of phages – viruses that infect bacteria – are largely composed of “dark matter”: genes that encode proteins whose functions remain unknown. A few years ago, researchers at the Weizmann Institute of Science identified an unusual viral protein they named a “sponge.” Unlike most tightly packed proteins, these proteins are porous and trap molecules within deep pockets – in this case, the alarm molecules used by bacterial immune systems. By capturing these signals, phages can silence the bacterium’s immune alarm and multiply inside it unhindered.
In a new study from Prof. Rotem Sorek’s lab, led by Dr. Nitzan Tal, researchers combined artificial intelligence with experimental biology to scan a database of about 32 million phage genes. This approach led to the discovery of two new families of sponge proteins, as well as another family of proteins that disrupt immune communication in a different way. The findings, published in Science, reveal how viruses silence bacterial alarm signals and shed light on a key strategy in the billion-year-long arms race between viruses and bacteria.
“It’s not yet known whether viruses that infect plants, animals and humans also use sponge proteins, but the computational and experimental approach we developed makes it possible to test this. If they do, sponge proteins could become targets for the development of antiviral therapies in the future,” says Prof. Sorek >> https://bit.ly/sponge-eng

What if a parasite could break into the most protected part of our cells – the nucleus – and sabotage the immune system from within?
A new study led by Prof. Neta Regev-Rudzki and Dr. Paula Abou Karam of the Weizmann Institute of Science, in collaboration with Dr. Zeev Melamed of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, reveals that this is exactly what the malaria parasite does.
The deadly parasite releases tiny vesicles containing messenger RNA (mRNA) molecules. These pe*****te immune cells and even manage to reach the cell’s most protected target – the nucleus – preventing entire families of immune defense proteins from being produced. At the same time, the disrupted cells send out distress signals that activate the immune system in the wrong direction. This allows the parasite to buy itself precious time to grow and spread.
“It’s a decoy mechanism,” says Prof. Regev-Rudzki. “Like throwing a gr***de in one direction so the guards run toward it, while you move somewhere else.”
The study, published in Cell Reports, may open new directions for developing anti-malarial drugs and even diagnostic approaches for other diseases >> https://bit.ly/mnra-mess-eng

This Saturday, February 28, the world marks Rare Disease Day - a chance to remember that rare does not mean alone.
A few years ago, a dedicated website for rare genetic diseases in Israel was launched, bringing together up-to-date and accessible medical and scientific information. The site, a joint initiative of Medical School Dean Prof. Ayelet Erez, WSoS Dean Prof. Maya Schuldiner, and Dr. Einat Zalckvar of Bar-Ilan University, was created to connect physicians, researchers, families and patients, and to help address the challenges of diagnosis, knowledge gaps, and the lack of clear, centralized information.
We have recently expanded accessibility, and most entries are now available in Arabic as well. When high-quality medical information is accessible in one’s native language, more people can understand, ask questions, and make informed decisions based on reliable knowledge.
We believe science is meant to serve the public, reduce disparities, and strengthen communities. Even when it comes to a rare disease, knowledge, research, and collaboration create a broader network of support.

At the Department of Science Teaching, writing is a central part of research practice. Articles and reports are long and complex, but just as importantly, writing itself is a research tool: it helps shape ideas and sharpen insights.
About once a month, students in the department organize a “writing marathon.” The day begins with setting personal goals and continues with cycles of 25 minutes of writing, followed by 5-minute breaks (the Pomodoro technique). Midway through the day, everyone gathers for a shared lunch, and at the end of the day, the participants revisit their goals and reflect on their progress.
Mobile phones are stacked at the front of the room, creating an atmosphere of focused energy and productivity.

We’re making waves in North Atlantic weather research!
This week marked the conclusion of the international NAWDIC aircraft measurement campaign over the North Atlantic. The unprecedented scientific mission builds directly on research led by Prof. Shira Raveh-Rubin’s dynamical meteorology group, asking a key question: What role do dry intrusions play in creating the conditions for extreme weather events?
Using a new combination of advanced instruments onboard the HALO research aircraft of the German Aerospace Center, and working in coordination with German, French and American research aircrafts, an international team, including seven Weizmann scientists and students, monitored weather forecasts and planned detailed measurement flights. The goal: to collect unique data that deepens our understanding of how storms develop and to improve weather forecasts.
Already during the campaign, new observations were fed into global operational weather forecasts, increasing precision!
Data collection is just the beginning. The next step is to explore how these findings reshape the broader scientific picture.
