Last week, undergraduate and graduate students from universities across Israel came to the Weizmann Institute of Science for the first-ever edition of “The Frontiers of Quantum Science” summer program.
Hosted by the Faculty of Physics, the program brought students together with leading researchers working on some of the field’s most intriguing questions, from cold atoms and ions and superconductors to quantum error correction and emerging quantum technologies.
Beyond the lectures, students toured labs, presented and discussed research at a poster session, and connected with researchers and fellow students across the quantum science community.
A week of new ideas, new questions, and a closer look at where quantum research is heading next.
Thank you to everyone who joined us and made our first program a success. See you next year!

Losing your appetite – or, conversely, overeating – are two common responses to stress. A new study from the Weizmann Institute of Science reveals a previously unknown biological link between our eating habits and our mental state: Mental and physiological stress responses are orchestrated by a single gene that is active in the brain even before birth.
The study shows that the gene, called Orthopedia (Otp) - long known to play a key role in building the developing brain - remains active into adulthood, helping regulate key hormonal systems that determine how the brain controls stress, metabolism and even behavior.
"We have identified a new master regulator of balance in the brain and body," says Prof. Gil Levkowitz, whose team led the study in collaboration with the lab of Prof. Alon Chen, both at the Weizmann Institute of Science. "Understanding in greater detail how it works may one day lead to more precise ways of treating different aspects of stress and metabolic dysfunction - not by shutting the system down when something is not working properly, but by nudging it back into balance." >> https://bit.ly/stress-switch-ENG

Last week, 24 students from around the world presented the research they carried out in our labs during the Kupcinet-Getz International Summer Program at the Weizmann School of Science.
The three-day symposium marked the culmination of seven weeks on campus, working alongside our scientists, experiencing life in an active research environment, exploring Israel, and becoming part of an international scientific community.
Congratulations to all of this year’s participants. We hope this is just the beginning of your journey with us!

Comfort is clearly in the eye of the beholder.
On our campus, a prickly pear cactus seems to make the perfect perch for some of our resident birds.

When a wound does not heal properly, it leaves a scar. Similarly, mutations - permanent changes to genetic code - are often the result of damaged DNA that has not been properly repaired.
Mutations can impede the function of genes and lead to disease and aging, but they are also the source of genetic variety, which allows new traits to emerge and facilitates the evolutionary process. Scientists still do not fully understand why some damaged DNA segments are successfully repaired while others are not.
In a new study published in Nature Communications, researchers from the laboratory of Dr. Ariel Afek of Weizmann's Department of Chemical and Structural Biology identified which DNA sequences and structures are the preferred targets of several of the cell's most important DNA repair enzymes. The findings suggest that these preferences shaped the human genome and may even help explain how cells become cancerous.
"Understanding how repair mechanisms 'choose' their targets opens up all kinds of ways to harness them for our own needs," says Dr. Afek. "Since failures in repair mechanisms are a primary driver of cancer, my hope is that understanding them will pave the way for new, more targeted therapies." >>

Nature Communications,
