יום פתוח באוניברסיטת בר־אילן!

שמחנו לקחת חלק ביום הפתוח של אוניברסיטת בר־אילן, לצד מעבדות מחקר וחוקרים נוספים מהמחלקה ללימודי ארץ ישראל וארכיאולוגיה. הייתה לנו הזכות להציג בפני המבקרים את העשייה הארכיאולוגית שלנו ואת החיבור המרתק בין ארכיאולוגיה מסורתית לבין טכנולוגיות מחקר מתקדמות.

בין היתר הצגנו הדפסות תלת־ממד של ממצאים ארכיאולוגיים, תיעוד וצילום באמצעות רחפנים, וכלים של מציאות מדומה המאפשרים לחוות את העבר בדרך חדשה ומעשירה.

תודה גדולה לכל הסטודנטים והסטודנטיות שלקחו חלק, סייעו, הסבירו, שיתפו מניסיונם וייצגו בכבוד את המחלקה ואת מעבדת תל קנה.

Open Day at Bar-Ilan University!

We were delighted to participate in Bar-Ilan University’s Open Day alongside other research laboratories and scholars from the Department of Land of Israel Studies and Archaeology. It was a privilege to present our archaeological research and demonstrate the exciting integration of traditional archaeology with advanced technological tools.

Visitors were introduced to 3D-printed archaeological artifacts, drone-based documentation and aerial photography, and virtual reality applications that offer innovative ways to explore and experience the past.

A special thank you to all the students who contributed their time and knowledge, helped engage with visitors, and proudly represented both the department and the Tell Qana Archaeology Lab.

There is something especially moving about seeing the ancient mound within the agricultural landscape around it- a place where past and present meet, and the land continues to tell its stories.

גם המאה ה־20 הותירה את חותמה בתל קנה.

כאשר חושבים על תל קנה, הדמיון נוטה להתמקד בשכבות הקדומות של האתר- מתקופות הברונזה, הברזל והתקופה הפרסית. אולם לצד השרידים הקדומים, התל משמר גם פרק מאוחר יותר בתולדות הארץ: ימי מלחמת העולם הראשונה.

בשלהי 1917, לאחר כיבוש יפו בידי הצבא הבריטי, הפך מרחב הירקון לקו חזית בין הכוחות הבריטיים שהתקדמו צפונה לבין הכוחות העות׳מאניים שהתבצרו מצפון לנהר. הקרבות באזור התמקדו בשליטה במעברי הירקון, בדרכי התנועה ובנקודות התצפית הגבוהות.

תל קנה, המתנשא מעל מפגש נחל קנה, נחל הדר ונהר הירקון, היה חלק מן המרחב האסטרטגי הזה. מיקומו ממחיש מדוע אותו נוף משך אליו בני אדם לאורך אלפי שנים - מתיישבים, חקלאים וסוחרים, אך גם צבאות ולוחמים.

במסגרת מחקר מלחמת העולם הראשונה במרחב תל קנה נערכו סקרי פני שטח, ניתוח קווי ראייה ובחינה טופוגרפית של האזור, לצד שימוש בחישה מרחוק, תצלומי אוויר, יומני מלחמה ותעודות ארכיוניות. הממצאים כוללים תרמילים, רסיסים וחלקי ציוד צבאי, המחברים בין השרידים הארכאולוגיים לבין האירועים ההיסטוריים שעיצבו את נוף הירקון המודרני.

At Tell Qana, archaeology often focuses on ancient remains, yet the site also preserves traces of a much more recent past.

In late 1917, after the British capture of Jaffa, the Yarkon region became a strategic frontier between advancing British forces and Ottoman defensive positions north of the river. Tell Qana, overlooking the meeting point of Nahal Qana, Nahal Hadar, and the Yarkon River, formed part of this military landscape.

As part of the project’s First World War research, we combined surface surveys, topographic study, lines-of-sight analysis, remote sensing, aerial imagery, military diaries, and archival documents. Finds such as cartridge cases, shrapnel fragments, and military equipment help connect the archaeological evidence with the events that shaped the modern landscape of the region.

שבוע שעבר היה לנו יום מיוחד ומלא עשייה בתל קנה. צוות החפירה- דפנה, טלי, בתיה, שמחה ותמר- הגיע כבר בשעות הבוקר המוקדמות, ופתח יום אינטנסיבי ומשמעותי בשטח. פתחנו את היום במפגש עם תיירנים ומנהלי תיירות חוץ, שקיבלו סקירה מקיפה על האתר, ההיסטוריה שלו והפוטנציאל התיירותי הטמון במרחב תל קנה והסביבה. בהמשך היום קיימנו פגישה מקצועית עם ארכיאולוג הנפה אלכסנדר גליק וארכיאולוג רוני טואג מרשות העתיקות, יחד עם רועי שטיין, מפקח רשות נחל הירקון. המפגש התקיים כחלק מתהליך רחב של פיתוח סביבתי־אקולוגי במרחב התל. במסגרת זו בוצעו חתכי בדיקה.
דבר זה יאפשר גם להמשיך ולדגום קרקעות כחלק ממחקרה של הפדולוגית שלנו, דפנה קסרטו, ולשפר את הבנתנו בנוגע למאפייני הקרקע ואת פוטנציאל הממצא באזורים הצפוניים והמזרחיים של האתר.
במקביל, המשכנו את שיתוף הפעולה המחקרי ולקחנו דגימות OSL משטח B, כחלק מהמחקר המשותף עם פרופ׳ יואל רסקין מהמחלקה לסביבה, תכנון וקיימות באוניברסיטת בר-אילן. את היום חתמנו בפגישה עם מנכ״לית החברה הכלכלית של הוד השרון, אודליה גוטל, ועם מנהל הפארק האקולוגי, חיימון בלומנפלד, להם הצגנו את התקדמות הפרויקט ואת היעדים לעונת החפירות הקרובה.
התל נראה בשיא יופיו, מזג האוויר היה מאתגר, אבל האנרגיות בשטח והצוות הנהדר הפכו את היום הזה לחוויה מקצועית ואנושית יוצאת דופן.

היום קיימנו סיור שטח ממוקד בתל קנה, כחלק מההיערכות לקראת עונת החפירה הקרובה.
מטרת הסיור הייתה לאסוף נתונים מרחביים וצילומיים ברזולוציה גבוהה באמצעות מערכת Eagle וצילום רחפן. שילוב הנתונים יאפשר לנו ליצור מודל תלת־ממדי מדויק של האתר ולדייק את יעדי החפירה לעונה הקרובה. שלב מקדים זה חיוני להתאמת שאלות המחקר למציאות בשטח ולתכנון אזורי חפירה ממוקדים.
במקביל, כחלק מהעבודה לקראת הפרסום על תולדות פרדס בחריה ומערכת המים הקשורה בו, חשפנו ותיעדנו כמה מהקטעים של אמת המים. שרידים אלה שופכים אור על ההתפתחות החקלאית והתשתיתית של אזור השרון בעת החדשה.
זה היה יום של עבודת צוות מסורה: דפנה הובילה את איסוף הנתונים באמצעות מערכת Eagle, וטלִי ונדיה היו אחראיות על הרישום והתיעוד בשטח.
אנחנו קרובים יותר לעונת החפירה החדשה- עם תכנון מדויק יותר והתרגשות גדולה לקראת הבאות.

Today we conducted a focused field visit to Tell Qana, as part of our preparations for the upcoming excavation season.
The primary objective of the visit was to collect high-resolution spatial and visual data using the Eagle system and drone photography. This integrated dataset will allow us to generate an accurate 3D model of the site and refine our excavation strategy for the season ahead. These preliminary stages are critical for aligning research questions with the spatial realities on the ground and for planning targeted excavation areas.

Despite the intense heat, the site at this time of year is remarkably striking. The landscape of the tell, in its seasonal colors and textures, offers a vivid reminder of the long-term interaction between human activity and the natural environment.

In addition, as part of our ongoing work toward the publication on the history of Pardes Bahariya and its associated water system, we exposed and documented several segments of the aqueduct. These remains provide important insights into the agricultural and infrastructural development of the Sharon region in the modern period.

This was very much a team effort:
• Dafna led the data acquisition using the Eagle system
• Nadia and Tally were responsible for field recording and documentation

We are now one step closer to the new excavation season, with a clearer plan, improved datasets, and renewed excitement for what lies ahead

תוכנית שנתית ייחודית ומרגשת של המעבדה לאיחוי שברים בפרויקט הארכיאולוגי תל קנה, בשיתוף עמותת עמך לניצולי שואה, מחברת בין ארכיאולוגיה לטיפול.
במרכז התוכנית פועלת הקבוצה “שרידים ושורדים” - מסגרת תהליכית לניצולי שואה, העוסקת בזיכרון, פרידה והשלמה דרך עבודה עם ממצאים ארכיאולוגיים כמרחב לעיבוד רגשי.
את הקבוצה מובילה גב' יעל גנירם, דרמה תרפיסטית, בליווי ד"ר איילת אורג וד"ר עמית דגן וצוות מעבדת תל קנה.
המפגשים משלבים בין חומר, זיכרון וסיפור אישי: מנר עתיק המעורר שאלות על אור ודעיכה, ועד שיח על מושגים של חפירה, הסתרה וגילוי. במסגרתם העלו המשתתפים זיכרונות מחוויות החיים בגטו - כיצד הוסתרו חפצים יקרי ערך, וכיצד נעשו ניסיונות לשוב ולאתרם לאחר המלחמה.
לצד הקבוצה מתקיימות הרצאות וסדנאות שמעבירים צוות המעבדה שמטרתן העמקת החיבור בין עבר חומרי לחוויה אנושית.
התוכנית מלווה במחקר שנתמך על ידי הפקולטה למדעי החברה, הבוחן את שילוב הארכיאולוגיה בהתערבויות טיפוליות, כחלק מהמשגה מתפתחת של ארכיאולוגיה טיפולית.

The annual program by the Lab for
Mending Fragments at the Tell Qana Archaeological Project, in partnership with AMCHA - The Israeli Center for Mental Health and Social Support for Holocaust Survivors and the Second Generation, merges archaeology with therapeutic practice. Central to this is the group “Remains and Survivors,” which helps Holocaust survivors explore memory, loss, and reconciliation through engagement with archaeological artifacts.

Led by drama therapist Ms. Yael Ganiram and supported by Dr. Ayelet Oreg, Dr. Amit Dagan, and the Tell Qana lab team, the sessions intertwine material culture with personal narratives, prompting reflections on life in the ghetto and the significance of recovered items. Additional lectures and workshops from the laboratory team enhance participants' understanding of the relationship between material culture and human experience. Ongoing research, backed by the Faculty of Social Sciences, examines the role of archaeology in therapeutic interventions, contributing to the emerging field of therapeutic archaeology.
