🔥 38°C, three excavation areas, and one shared passion: archaeology!

We’ve completed the first week of Season 3 at Tell Qana—and what a week it has been!

This season we returned to Areas A and B, and opened a new excavation area, Area T, in the Lower City, with four new squares positioned following the results of our GPR survey.

⛏️ Already in the first week, the archaeology has begun to surprise us: new evidence from the Iron Age and Persian period, traces of Philistine material culture, Persian-period architecture and activity areas, an articulated calf skeleton, and even remains connected to the Ottoman–British fighting during World War I.

But perhaps the best part of the first week was the people.

It was wonderful to meet again those who have already become part of the Tell Qana family—and just as exciting to welcome new team members and volunteers joining us for the first time.

Old friends and new faces, students, archaeologists, and volunteers—all with one thing in common:

Even 38°C cannot stop them when archaeology is involved. ☀️❤️🏺

There is something inspiring about seeing a team come together over a shared curiosity about the past, ready to work hard, learn, discover, and get very, very dusty along the way.

And we’re only getting started.

Season 3 is underway. The Lower City is opening up. New questions are emerging. And there is much more waiting beneath the surface.

🔥 38 מעלות, שלושה שטחי חפירה, ואהבה אחת משותפת – ארכיאולוגיה!

סיימנו את השבוע הראשון של עונת החפירות השלישית בתל קנה – ואיזה שבוע זה היה!

השנה חזרנו לחפור בשטחים A ו-B, ובמקביל פתחנו שטח חפירה חדש – שטח T בעיר התחתית, ובו ארבעה ריבועי חפירה שמיקומם נקבע בעקבות תוצאות סקר הרדאר חודר הקרקע (GPR).

⛏️ וכבר בשבוע הראשון האדמה התחילה לספר את סיפורה: עדויות חדשות מתקופת הברזל ומהתקופה הפרסית, רמזים נוספים לתרבות החומרית הפלישתית, אדריכלות ומרחבי פעילות מהתקופה הפרסית, שלד עגל שנמצא בארטיקולציה, ואפילו שרידים הקשורים למפגש בין הכוחות העות’מאניים והבריטיים באזור במהלך מלחמת העולם הראשונה.

אבל אולי הדבר המשמח ביותר השבוע היה דווקא האנשים.

היה כיף גדול לפגוש שוב את מי שכבר הפכו לחלק ממשפחת תל קנה, ומרגש לא פחות להכיר את המצטרפים החדשים – אנשי צוות, סטודנטים ומתנדבים שהגיעו לחפור איתנו בפעם הראשונה.

וותיקים וחדשים, לכולם מכנה משותף אחד:

יש משהו מיוחד בלראות קבוצה של אנשים שמגיעה יחד מתוך סקרנות ואהבה לעבר, מוכנה לעבוד קשה, ללמוד, לגלות – וכן, גם להתכסות בלא מעט אבק בדרך.

וזו רק ההתחלה.

עונה 3 יצאה לדרך. העיר התחתית נפתחת בפנינו, שאלות חדשות עולות – ומתחת לפני השטח מחכים לנו עוד סיפורים רבים.

ככה נראה השבוע הראשון שלנו: חבורה של סטודנטים, חוקרים ומתנדבים שהתאספו מכל הארץ. הם מגיעים עם אור ראשון, חובשים כובעים, ומתחילים ‘לנקות’ את ריבועי החפירה. כל אחד מהם הוא חלק מהחידה.
בפוסט הזה אנחנו רוצים להראות לכם את האנשים שמאחורי המברשות. אלה שמשקיעים את האנרגיה בתוך הריבוע, אלה שמוצאים רגע לנשום ולחייך, ואלה שיוצרים את הזיכרונות של העונה הזו. החפירה היא הבית שלנו בארבעת השבועות הקרובים. השבוע הראשון היה רק ההתחלה של החיבור בינינו לבין התל.

This is what our first week looks like: a group of students, researchers, and volunteers gathered from all over the country. They arrive at first light, put on their hats, and start ‘cleaning’ the excavation squares. Every single one of them is a piece of the puzzle.
In this post, we want to show you the people behind the brushes. The ones who pour their energy into the square, the ones who find a moment to breathe and smile, and the ones creating the memories of this season. The excavation is our home for the next four weeks. This first week was just the beginning of our connection with the tell.

עוד שלושה ימים מתחילים.

הבוקר עלינו לתל כדי להכין את השטח לקראת פתיחת עונת החפירות השלישית בתל קנה. יחד עם שני, בתיה, שמחה ותמר- מנהלות השטחים שלנו- ועם ירדן מרשות העתיקות, העברנו את מכולת הציוד למקומה, סימנו את ריבועי החפירה, הצבנו את השירותים, ארגנו את מתחם ארוחת הבוקר, ובעיקר דאגנו שכל מה שצריך יהיה מוכן לקראת יום ראשון.

תמיד מרגש לראות איך מקום שנראה שקט וריק הופך לאט לאט למחנה חפירה. עוד מעט יגיעו הסטודנטים, המתנדבים והחוקרים, הקפה הראשון של הבוקר יתחיל לזרום, המעדרים ייכנסו לאדמה, ושוב ננסה לחשוף עוד חלק קטן מהסיפור של תל קנה.

התל נראה פשוט נהדר. עכשיו נשאר רק לחכות ליום ראשון.

מחכים בקוצר רוח לפתוח עונה חדשה של גילויים, מחקר והרבה עבודה טובה.

Three days to go.

This morning, we went up to the tell to prepare the site for the opening of the third excavation season at Tell Qana. Together with Shani, Batya, Simcha, and Tamar, our area supervisors, and Yarden from the Israel Antiquities Authority, we moved the equipment container into place, marked out the excavation squares, organised the breakfast area, and, most importantly, made sure that everything would be ready for Sunday.

It is always exciting to watch a place that seems quiet and empty slowly transform into an excavation camp. Soon, the students, volunteers, and researchers will arrive, the first coffee of the morning will start flowing, the hoes will break the soil, and once again we will try to uncover another small part of Tell Qana’s story.

The tell looks absolutely wonderful. Now all that remains is to wait for Sunday.

We cannot wait to begin a new season of discoveries, research, and plenty of good, hard work.

בָּכוֹ תִבְכֶּה בַלַּיְלָה, וְדִמְעָתָהּ עַל לֶחֱיָהּ; אֵין לָהּ מְנַחֵם...״
(איכה א, א–ב)

בתמונה: מטבע מסוג יהודה השבויה שנמצא בתל. על המטבע רואים טרופאיון- עמוד עץ שעליו הוצגו כלי נשק והשריון שנלקחו מן האויב המובס. לרגליו כורעת דמות נשית, המגלמת את יהודה השבויה.

מטבעות מסדרת "יהודה השבויה" הוטבעו לאחר דיכוי המרד הגדול וחורבן ירושלים ובית המקדש השני בשנת 70 לספירה. הם לא שימשו רק כאמצעי תשלום, אלא גם כאמצעי תעמולה שנע מיד ליד ברחבי האימפריה: הכרזה על ניצחונה של רומא ועל הכנעתה של יהודה.

כמעט אלפיים שנה לאחר מכן, במלחמת העולם הראשונה, הוענקו ללוחמים היהודים מדליות המבוססות על המטבע הרומי אך עם מסר הפוך ״יהודה המשתחררת״. בעשור למדינת ישראל הונפקה מדליה רשמית "ישראל המשוחררת" המבוססת על אותו רעיון.
המטבע שנועד להנציח את תבוסתה של יהודה הפך לסמל של תקומה.

מאחלים לכולם צום קל ומועיל.

Pictured here is a Judaea Capta coin discovered at Tell Qana. The coin depicts a tropaion- a wooden post upon which weapons and armor taken from a defeated enemy were displayed. At its feet kneels a female figure personifying captive Judaea.

Coins from the Judaea Capta series were minted following the suppression of the Great Jewish Revolt and the destruction of Jerusalem and the Second Temple in 70 CE. They served not only as currency, but also as instruments of propaganda that passed from hand to hand throughout the Roman Empire, proclaiming Rome’s victory and the subjugation of Judaea.

Nearly two thousand years later, during the First World War, Jewish soldiers were awarded medals inspired by the Roman coin- but carrying the opposite message: "Judaea Liberated". To mark the tenth anniversary of the State of Israel, an official “Israel Liberated” medal was issued, based on the same idea.

A coin intended to commemorate Judaea’s defeat ultimately became a symbol of national revival.

אתמול סיימנו במפגש חגיגי ומרגש שנה של פעילות בתוכנית "שרידים ושורדים", שיתוף פעולה בין מועדון עמך פתח תקווה לבין המעבדה לאיחוי שברים, הפועלת במסגרת הפרויקט הארכיאולוגי תל קנה ובשיתוף בית הספר לעבודה סוציאלית באוניברסיטת בר־אילן.

לאורך השנה התקיימה במועדון קבוצה טיפולית שבועית בהנחיית צוות עמך, לצד הרצאות ופעילויות פסיכו־סוציאליות סביב ארכיאולוגיה, שברים, שרידים, זיכרון, אובדן ומשמעות. את הליווי הסוציולוגי של התוכנית הובילה ד"ר איילת אורג.

את השנה פתחנו בביקור בחפירות תל קנה, ואתמול חתמנו אותה בביקור באוניברסיטת בר־אילן עם 16 ניצולי שואה והמטפלות שלהם. היום כלל ביקור במעבדה לאיחוי שברים, מפגש עם ממצאים מרתקים והרצאות מיוחדות.

ד"ר ענת שנקמן הרצתה על בוטניקה ארכיאולוגית, על חיטה ועל מחקרי המעבדה לבוטניקה, באופן נגיש, רגיש ומעורר סקרנות. ד"ר עמית דגן הציג ממצאים ממלחמת העולם הראשונה ומהקרבות שהתחוללו בתל קנה עצמו.

זו הייתה דרך מרגשת לסיים שנה של טיפול, למידה, זיכרון וחיבור אנושי.
Yesterday, we concluded a meaningful year of the “Remains and Survivors” program- a collaboration between Amcha Petah Tikva and the Lab for Mending Fragments, which operates as part of the Tell Qana Archaeological Project, in partnership with the School of Social Work at Bar-Ilan University.

Throughout the year, the program included weekly therapeutic meetings, lectures, and psychosocial activities centered on archaeology, memory, loss, and meaning. The program’s sociological guidance was led by Dr. Ayelet Oreg.

We ended the year with a visit to the Lab for Mending Fragments at Bar-Ilan University, together with 16 Holocaust survivors and their caregivers, as well as special lectures by Dr. Anat Schenkman and Dr. Amit Dagan.

A very special conclusion to a year of therapy, learning, memory, and human connection.

There is something especially moving about seeing the ancient mound within the agricultural landscape around it- a place where past and present meet, and the land continues to tell its stories.
