Wmik Wednesday

The Land Rover WMIK (Weapons Mount Installation Kit) is one of Britain’s 🇬🇧 most legendary fighting vehicles. Introduced in 1999 by Land Rover and Ricardo Vehicle Engineering, it stripped the Wolf 110 down to its bones — no doors, no roof, no compromise.
Armed with a .50-cal HMG or 7.62mm GPMG on the rear ring mount and a pintle-mounted GPMG up front, the WMIK gave its crew a full 360° arc of fire. Fast, aggressive, and brutally effective as a reconnaissance and close fire support platform.
It went everywhere British forces went from the deserts of Iraq on Op Telic, the mountains of Afghanistan on Op Herrick. The Paras, Royal Marines, RAF Regiment, SAS, and SBS all put it to work around the world 🌍.As the threat evolved, so did the vehicle, upgraded through the EWMIK, RWMIK, and RWMIK+, gaining belly armour, ECM suites, and eventually armoured doors.

Lightly protected and always exposed, the crews who rode these had nothing between them and the enemy but speed, aggression, and skill.

Israeli 🇮🇱 MDT David Land Rover 90
Built in Auburn, Alabama 🇺🇸

The David is a cost effective, highly armored, light protected all-terrain vehicle, currently based on the Toyota Land Cruiser and the Toyota Hilux. Before the end of Defender in 2016 production many ‘DT Davids were based on the Defender 110 and 90 platform.
MDT is the leading source for the Israel Detense Force (IDF) for its armored vehicles. MDT is the sole source for the IDF for its standard armored patrol vehicle - the David.

MDT has also supplied Davids based on the Toyota Platform to the US Government, for use in Africa. Over 1000 Davids, on a variety of platforms, have been fielded with daily combat activity.

How a Solihull utility wagon became the indispensable machine of Britain’s 🇬🇧 last colonial war 🪖 💥

Aden, the fortified port at the tip of the Arabian Peninsula had been a Crown Colony since 1839, and by the early 1960s it was surrounded by a patchwork of feudal protectorates the British were trying to weave into a single Federation of South Arabia before granting independence. The plan was already unravelling when, in December 1963, a gr***de 💥 was thrown at the British High Commissioner at Khormaksar airport. The Aden Emergency 🚨 had begun.

What followed was a conflict without front lines part counterinsurgency in the Radfan highlands against NLF and FLOSY guerrillas, part urban warfare in Aden’s dense districts of Crater, Sheikh Othman, and Al Mansoura. Regiments rotated through: the Parachute Regiment, the Royal Marines, the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, the Kings Own Scottish Borderers. All of them rode Land Rovers.

By the time of the Aden emergency , 🇬🇧 Army had been using for over a decade. The Series IIA, introduced in 1961, was the definitive model of the conflict period. With 77 horsepower, what it lacked in power it made up for in mechanical honesty: almost any competent soldier could maintain it.

In Aden, the vehicles were modified relentlessly by the regiments that used them. Rollcages were made and sandbags were laid across floors as improvised mine protection. Spare jerrycans were strapped to every available surface. Windscreens were folded flat or removed entirely while on patrol, as a pane of glass offered a sniper a convenient reflection to aim at.

Britain’s withdrawal from Aden was completed on 29 Nov 1967, the most ignominious end to a colonial commitment the
country had managed: no ceasefire, no treaty, no orderly transfer of power.

The Land Rover rummages through the glovebox, produces its papers, and gets waved straight in.

The tank just stares at him.
