What Can We Learn by Practicing Asanas?

Learning Non-Reactivity What happens when you stay in a pose like Paśchimottānāsana or Sālamba Sarvāṅgāsana, and after a few minutes you feel an urge to come out of the pose? Do you follow this urge? If you do, you won’t learn much from this experience. You may want to come out because of discomfort, stress, some worry, or simply because of distraction—and before you know it, you are out of the pose....

After our Iyengar Yoga retreat at the Alpaca farm in the Negev, one participant shared this reflection:

I wanted to express my gratitude to Eyal for the meaningful journey we had on this retreat. The Alpaca farm is a beautiful place and it was a unique juncture of the elements…not only in the elemental yogic practice Eyal guided us in but in the matter itself. The elements of earth expressed in the land, the food, the buildings and structures, and the alpacas themselves gave me a sense of foundation and sustenance. I experienced the water element in the deliciously warm showers in contrast to the brisk air, and in the flow of jovial conversation and tolerant acceptance. There was the dynamic energy of fire in our catering team, led by the ever sunny Maya, in the kitchen, with music and cooking fire, there were the enthusiastic dogs running to and fro, as well as small but steady Shabbat candles, and a jumping bonfire. The air element expressed itself not just in the clean crisp air we breathed, sometimes seen as visible puffs from our nostrils, but also in the intellectual brilliance and wisdom of our leaders and participants. And finally the element of ether, or space. Literally the most ethereal of the elements. What is so often now referred to as “holding space,” our practice of yoga was what drew us all together for this moment in time and it gave me this sense that we all made room for magic to happen. In our busy schedules, in our bodies and in our hearts. For me, it all came together in the personal, human connections that all of these elements provided.
May we be blessed to continue in our practice of yoga, and I hope our paths will cross again.

What Is Required to Be a Good Yoga Practitioner and a Good Yoga Teacher

Introduction In this short article, I will discuss two interesting questions:• What character traits and qualities are required in order to be a good yoga practitioner?• What character traits and qualities are required in order to be a good yoga teacher? These are interesting questions because the answers to them can guide us on our yogic path and help define the qualities we need to develop and cultivate in order to become good practitioners or good yoga teachers....

On Aparigraha

In previous posts, I discussed the Yamas (see: On the Practice of Ahimsa and About Satya), here I discuss the fifth Yama - Aparigraha. Aparigraha is the opposite of Parigraha, which means hoarding or collecting. Not consuming more than we need, and not chasing and collecting possessions, leads to a simpler, quieter, and happier life. Following Aparigraha gives us more mental peace....

Yoga and Aging — Reflections

Introduction The Yoga and Aging Program, which concluded in November, has been a deeply insightful journey. I learned a great deal from my colleagues and friends: Karin Stephan, Patricia Walden, Peentz Dubble, and Rahel Wasserfall (the program’s coordinator). Although we didn’t meet face-to-face, we had profound online conversations throughout the years of our participation. In preparing for the closing panel—and after it—I spent time contemplating some of the questions that Rahel raised....

Yoga practice and aging explored through gratitude, acceptance, Kriya Yoga, wisdom. A reflective piece on how yoga supports aging gracefully.

The Five Reflections of Gratitude and Appreciation of the Good We are somehow designed by evolution and the need to survive, to focus on what is missing and on the threats and worries we have. We tend to forget all that we do have, which is so much! Devoting a few minutes to contemplate the following reflections can change your day and, over time, incline your mind toward more positive thinking....

Or: From Chitta Vritti Nirodha to Kaivalya Chapter 3 and 4 of Patanjali’s yoga sutras takes the Sadhaka (the spiritual aspirant) to the zenith of yoga – to the state of Kaivalya- emancipation, or Ultimate Liberation. These last two chapters are theoretical and more challenging to comprehend. In The Tree of Yoga, B.K.S. Iyengar explains in simple words the transformation that one has to go through in order for the Chitta to be ready for Kaivalya....
