This photo shows King Abdullah I of Jordan at the Haram al‑Sharif (Temple Mount) in Jerusalem’s Old City, with the Dome of the Rock and its surrounding colonnade visible behind him.

Taken on 1 June 1948, the image dates to the early weeks of the interstate phase of the 1948 Arab–Israeli War, shortly after Jordanian (Arab Legion) forces took control of the Old City and East Jerusalem in late May.

In the years that followed, Abdullah became closely associated with the care and restoration of Jerusalem’s Islamic holy sites, a custodial role the Jordanian royal family has continued to uphold.

The armed guards flanking the steps reflect the tense, wartime conditions in the city at that moment.

Standing at the Mediterranean tide line in 1941, a community casts its sins into the ocean to mark the Jewish New Year.

Captured by renowned Yishuv photographer Zoltan Kluger, this image of Tashlich in Tel Aviv (?) captures the unique energy of the era. The crowd reflects a remarkable slice of life: long-bearded rabbis, men in light suits and straw boaters, and children walking along the wet sand.

It’s a striking image of a city defining itself, where deep-rooted heritage meets the daily rhythm of coastal life. That spirit remains unchanged on Tel Aviv’s beaches today.

Long tables, white cloths, and a whole community setting the scene- this is Rosh Hashanah dinner in the making.

The photo shows members of Kibbutz Gan Shmuel arranging rows of communal tables on the kibbutz lawn for the Jewish New Year, sometime between 1940 and 1950. Gan Shmuel, one of the early collective settlements founded in the Hadera region in the 1920s, built its daily life around shared labor and shared meals, and the High Holidays were no exception, with the entire kibbutz gathering at one long table rather than separate family ones. The bare wooden benches and stacked place settings in the photo capture the quiet, communal choreography that came before the feast.

That model of collective celebration - everyone eating together, no one dining alone, shaped generations of Israeli society and still echoes in how many communities here mark the holidays today.

Behind a Jaffa street sign lies a name most people mispronounce, and a man most people have never heard of. 🕯️

The text traces the story of Rabbi Yehuda Halevi of Raguza, who became Rabbi of Jaffa in 1825. Finding a small Jewish community that transported its dead all the way to Jerusalem for burial, he established that no religious law stood in the way and founded Jaffa's own Jewish cemetery in 1834.
A polyglot fluent in six languages, he later united Sephardim and Ashkenazim in a single communal body and helped bring the first Alliance Israélite school to the city.

His name endures today mostly as a street sign in Jaffa, his old orange grove now sits under what's known as Tel Aviv's Montefiore neighborhood, a quiet reminder of how the city's earliest civic institutions, from cemeteries to schools, still trace back to figures like him.
