Tamir's framework of activities includes five programs; the main programs are the Tamir Mechina Program and the Returning to Lead Educator Program. The Tamir Pre-military Preparatory Program ("Mechina") is a specialized, one-and-a-half year pre-military educational program for post high-school students, blending Jewish values' learning, volunteerism, physical pre-military preparation, and leadersh
ip development projects. These contingents are highly successful in exposing our post high-school students to their real potential and creating within them a new sense of self-esteem and higher motivation for productive service in the army in particular and for successful civilian life in the future. The main activities of the Program are as follows: educational activity- imparting Jewish, human and Zionistic values as well as character refinement; challenging outdoor activities- such as hikes, in order to develop and/or rehabilitate the student's self-esteem as well as develop responsibility, leadership, confidence, teamwork and mutual assistance to one another; leadership development seminars- which develop interpersonal communication and mental preparation for IDF service; and volunteerism- where the students realize their ability to influence and empower the lives of others and realize their significance to society. The Returning to Lead Educator Program is a four-year B. program for building highly-effective educator-leaders, who themselves originate from development towns, and giving them the tools to empower and transform local at-risk youth into leaders. The Program's goal is to build professional educators who: a) excel as educators, aware of their strengths and capabilities in bringing about change; b) will become local leadership role models; and c) can ultimately create an educational movement which fuses group study of values-oriented material, mutual responsibility, the creation of volunteering activities and leadership among development town residents. The Program is built upon the following three foundations: acquiring higher education; practice in the classroom and activity; and building a developed personality in the educator and his students via an in-depth self-clarification process. Educators in the Program seek to empower youth by providing the tools necessary to remove the obstacles from high-school students' personal progress, expose them to their strengths, and encourage them to reach their full potential and essentially transform their self-image. Returning to Lead guides its graduates to live in the peripheries in which they will teach, and particularly encourage the graduates' return to their home communities. There are currently 50 trainees in the Returning to Lead Educator Program. The IDF Graduate Educational Community Program is a pilot program for sending IDF graduates out to development towns in order to change the mindsets of local youth. The change is implemented via our group of IDF graduates in two ways: by teaching local youth about values via a standardized curriculum; and by building and implementing community volunteer projects, which foster great feelings of accomplishment among the young participants. There are currently two IDF Graduates groups. We have no doubt that they will become the development towns' future leadership. The Youth Leadership Project in the High Schools uses volunteering activities in order to develop groups of high school students from ninth to twelfth grade into leaders. Coordinating and implementing the project develop personal responsibility and social leadership prior to their army tenure and prepare them for life. The Educator Community Track organizes students who have completed Tamir's Graduate Program into pro-active self-contained groups in Israel's peripheries, as attractive centers of activity for young people from Israel's development towns (including those who are not necessarily graduates of Tamir's programs). Tamir encourages these groups to return to their hometowns and to serve their home communities with high motivation and the educational empowerment they absorbed at Tamir. Tamir continues to guide these communities until their full independence and integration in their locales.
