Proud to share, slightly delayed by Israeli post and my own travels (and maybe also the awkwardness of sharing anything meaningful on social media these days) the completion of my MA at Hebrew University. My academic studies have always profoundly influenced the way I learn and guide students in Torah, if nothing else because in this environment I will always remain a student. Let this post also be a casual reminder that if you always wanted to learn to lein Megillah now is as a good a time as ever to start, and if you’ve been curious about Kabbalah - I wrote my MA thesis on the quintessential beginners textbook, as it were, which is a great place to start. Today's Talmud class with my student on zoom! We drew up this diagram together as we learned. Those familiar with this popular sugia will know that this is far from the conclusion, but we are full of suspense for the end of the sugia next week. Will Hazal give us what we want? Or will they leave it vague? Stay tuned.

האמונה הקבלית גורסת כי סידור קערת ליל הסדר על פי מבנה האילן הקבלי מהווה השתקפות של הקוסמוס בצורתו האידיאלית, ובכך תורמת לתיקון העולם באופן מעשי. פרופ' יוסי חיות, ראש המרכז העולמי לחקר התרשים הקבלי ומייסד The Ilanot Project - מפעל האילנות, מסביר כי על פי הקבלה - מסורת יהודית שידועה מסוף המאה ה-12 ועוסקת בסודות התורה והעולם - הבריאה כולה מורכבת מצירופים שונים של 10 כוחות אלוהיים הנאצלים מ"אין סוף" (האלוהות האינסופית) ומכונים "ספירות". וממש כמו בסליל DNA, לכל נברא (גם טקסט - בעיקר התורה - וגם הטבע) יש הרכב ספירות ייחודי לו, שהכרתו תסייע לנו לחשוף את סוד קיומו.
מקובלים נהגו לשרטט תרשימים של הרכבי הספירות השונים, ואת אחד התרשימים המועילים והרב גוניים ביותר ברפרטואר של התרבות המלומדת דאז, אימצו המקובלים כמייצג את המבנה האלוהי: העץ. זהו העץ (האילן) הקבלי - הביטוי החזותי של האלוהות, של מבנה היקום, ושל שלבי הבריאה.
בתקופה בה התפתחה הקבלה, סברו מדענים כי עצם קיומו של דמיון בין שני חפצים יוצר ערוץ מחבר ביניהם. כך סברו שתמונה של מקום או אדם מנכיח אותו ממש, ושבדרך זו ניתן ליצור ערוץ שמאפשר לנצל את ההשפעה הקיימת מעצם הדמיון. דוגמא לתפיסה זו ניתן למצוא במדים האדומים שצבאות נהגו לעתים ללבוש כדי לגייס את כוחו של אל המלחמה מארס, המשויך לכוכב הלכת האדום - מאדים.
במחצית השנייה של המאה ה-16, נהגו מקובלי צפת להמציא מנהיגים חדשים המבוססים על רעיונות קבליים ואף להוסיף רבדים סמליים קבליים למנהגים קיימים. כך החלו לנהוג גם בקשר לקערת ליל הסדר: מעתה הציעו המקובלים שיש לסדר את המאכלים שמעליה ע״פ המבנה האידיאלי של האילן הקבלי. לפי אותו מנהג קבלי, שלוש המצות מייצגות את שלוש הספירות העליונות: כתר, חכמה ובינה. הזרוע מציג את ספירת חסד, הביצה את ספירת גבורה, המרור – תפארת, החרוסת – נצח, הכרפס – הוד, החזרת – יסוד, והקערה עצמה המחזיקה את הכל, את הספירה התחתונה, מלכות.
ומדוע חשבו המקובלים לסדר את קערת הפסח לפי האילן הקבלי? בגלל השאיפה לתיקון עולם: רעיון מרכזי במסורת היהודית בכלל ובזו הקבלית בפרט, לפיו רדיפת הצדק והשלום תורמת לתיקון העולם במישור החברתי והאנושי, וקיום מצוות על פי סודותיהן הקבליים תורם לתיקון העולם האלוהי, שגם הוא זקוק לתיקון כל עוד שהקדוש ברוך הוא והשכינה אינם במצב של ייחוד. לשם כך נהגו המקובלים לומר ״לשם ייחוד קב״ה ושכינתו״ לפי קיום כל מצווה.
כך, לתפיסתם של המקובלים, סידור סימני הפסח על פי האילן הקבלי הופך את ליל הסדר מטקס סמלי שבו מזכירים את העבר ההיסטורי למעמד קדוש שבו נוצר ערוץ ישיר בין קערת ליל הסדר לעולם האלוהי, ושדרכו ניתן למשוך את השפע ואת הברכה מהעליונים לתחתונים, ואף לתרום מצדינו לתיקון העולם האלוהי העליון.
עד היום, לומדי הקבלה ואוהדיה, החסידים בראשם, נוהגים לסדר את קערת הסדר בדיוק באופן זה.

On February 7th I will begin teaching a beginners class on Medieval Kabbalah in English. The class will take place every Sunday at 8PM (Israel time) on zoom. Please be in touch if you would like to sign up and feel free to spread the word!

About the class:
In this introductory course we will delve into various early texts of Kabbalah such as the Zohar, Sha’arei Orah, and Ma’arekhet ha-elohut. The course will offer an introduction to key concepts of Kabbalah, and will otherwise primarily focus on learning the texts themselves. The course will be flexible - students are welcome to suggest texts that they would like us to explore - and function as a kind of chevruta, i.e. full participation on the part of the students instead of the lecture format. Throughout the course students are invited to ask questions and offer their own interpretations of the text we’ll be learning. My intention will be to guide you through these exciting texts while you cultivate you own tools for navigating them independently so that you come away with a feeling of fulfilment and with the skills to access this essential and inspiring part of our tradition independently. This class is perfect for anyone with little to no background but with lots of curiosity.

About me:
Currently completing my MA in Jewish studies at Hebrew University as a Mandel fellow, my research focuses on medieval Kabbalah and philosophy. I recently completed the 7 year Daf Yomi cycle and have been teaching students of all ages and backgrounds for nearly a decade.

Teaching a class on Hassidut for beginners every Sunday on zoom at 5PM Israel time. We'll be reading sources from a variety of different works surrounding the Parsha, the Chodesh, and the Chagim. Open to men and women and to all ages. Texts will be in Hebrew but I will translate them and the discussion will be in English. PM me if you would like more info 😀

Last year, I merited to successfully complete the 7-year daf yomi cycle. I opted not to start the cycle again, not because I didn't enjoy the commitment or routine, but because as much as I love the Talmud, there are so many other essential Jewish texts worthy of long term immersion. Also, I wanted to see what my mornings would look like in the absence of difficult Aramaic text. Turns out, they've been pretty boring! So in one lunar month's time on Rosh HaShana, with God's help I will embark on a three year cycle studying a daily section of the Holy Zohar. My "daf" will be determined according to the helpful sectioning in the pocket sized Zohar set linked below.

The Zohar daily content quantity is comparable to that of Talmud, and Zohar yomi will certainly have its new challenges. Doing daf yomi was always more fun when friends were reading it too, in that we would connect with each other when there were particularly difficult passages or interesting/funny aggadetas — and of course, joint siyyums. In that spirit, I invite you all to purchase this set (it features a Hebrew translation - don't worry) and join me.

I would be happy to offer my tutoring services to Zohar beginners with an introduction, and even weekly classes to discuss difficult/interesting texts that we cover, exploring any issues and themes to the best of my ability. Today a bat mitzvah student completed her first perek of the megillah entirely over zoom! So proud of her and grateful to her supportive parents who sit with her while she practices in between lessons 💜🥳

I'm teaching a girl in Dubai for her bat mitzvah which falls on Purim, and today we got to the part of the Meggilah where they say that Esther has two names: Esther and Hadassa. So I brought the sugiya where this is discussed. After explaining to her the "tzurat ha-daf" we dove into the sugiya. Right in the middle when I was describing the Machloket between R. Meir and R. Yehuda she suddenly exclaims "this is so fun! I wish I was the writer of the gemara!" Dayeinu.

אני מלמדת ילדה בדובאי לקראת הבת מצווה שלה שיוצא בפורים שנה הבאה. היום בשיעור הגענו למקום במגילה שם מזכירים 2 שמות לאותה אישה - אסתר והדסה - אז הבאתי את הסוגיה במסכת מגילה שם דנים בנושא זה. אחרי שהסברתי לה את צורת הדף נכנסו לתוך הסוגיה עצמה. תוך כדי התיאור שלי את המחלוקת בין ר׳ מאיר ור׳ יהודה היא פתאום קראה בהתרגשות: ״איזה כיף! הלוואי שאני כתבתי את הגמרא!״ דיינו.
