The Hebrew University of Jerusalem has suspended all activities today, except for exams, to avoid disadvantaging reservist students.
This unprecedented action is in response to the tragic news of the murder of our student Carmel G*t, along with five other Israeli hostages, after being held captive by Hamas for nearly a year.
This shutdown is more extensive than any previous measures taken since the war began in October 2023. It reflects our ongoing commitment to standing in solidarity with the hostages and their families.
The Hebrew University of Jerusalem bows its head in mourning for Carmel G*t, a Master’s student at the School of Occupational Therapy, who was murdered while in the captivity of Hamas.
The bodies of Carmel and five others were tragically recovered by the IDF from a Hamas terror tunnel in Rafah, Gaza.
We also mourn the loss of Hersh Goldberg-Polin (23), Almog Sarusi (27), Ori Danino (25), Alexander Lobanov (33), and Eden Yerushalmi (24).
May their memories forever be a blessing. 🕯️

What determines whether a country can emerge from a crisis and become a changed, peaceful society?
These days, a very timely two-day international workshop, “New Frontiers in Research on Conflict and War,” is being held at The Harry S. Truman Research Institute.
Prof. Peter T. Coleman from Columbia University delivered a keynote speech in a special panel on "Freedom of Speech in Challenging Times."
Prof. Coleman, a social psychologist who has been helping Nemat (Minouche) Shafik, the President of Columbia University, navigate its recent crisis, explored how conflict resolution and complexity science provide guidance for dealing with seemingly intractable political differences.
He explained that three conditions must be present for a crisis to lead to change:
1. A large enough part of the population must be fed up with the status quo; the society must be motivated enough to change course (ref. Ripeness Theory, Zartman, 2000).
2. Presence of destabilizing events—current factors include COVID-19, AI, war, or polarization—make people question their basic assumptions (ref. Punctuated Equilibrium Theory, Diehl & Goertz, 2001).
3. There must be some sense of where we're going and how to get there (ref. Ripeness Theory, Zartman, 2000).

📢 The Consequences of an Academic Boycott 📢
Dr. Shir Atzil of Hebrew University's Department of Psychology, in collaboration with researchers from the and the , has published a compelling letter in the prestigious journal Nature.
The letter addresses the potential consequences of an academic boycott against Israel.
The researchers argue that "an academic boycott would harm efforts to protect liberal values and human rights in Israel, negatively impact Arab and Palestinian students who are integral to Israeli academia, and contradict universal principles of academic freedom."
We invite you to read the full letter and understand the profound implications of an academic boycott. Check out the article in Nature: https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-024-02051-y
