This short osteopathic guide demonstrates how to assess leg recoil, an important indicator of lower-limb tone and neurological maturity in newborns.
As osteopaths, we gently flex the infant’s hip and knee, then release the leg and observe the speed and quality of the recoil. A normal response is a quick, smooth return toward extension—showing healthy muscle tone, intact reflex pathways, and good neuromuscular integration.
A slow, delayed, stiff, or asymmetrical recoil may signal abnormal tone or underlying neurological or musculoskeletal imbalance. This simple maneuver forms a key part of a comprehensive pediatric osteopathic assessment and helps guide later clinical reasoning and treatment.
Osteopathic assessment of tone in the newborn includes stimulation of the lateral aspect of the hand. This assesses sensory input and motor output. For the full course go to palmm.org or bio.
