The sphenopetrosal junction is a small anatomical landmark with significant clinical relevance. It marks the point where the Eustachian tube changes from a rigid bony canal to its cartilaginous portion—the part responsible for middle ear ventilation and drainage.

In this reel, I demonstrate one way osteopaths assess this region using the greater wing of the sphenoid.

When treating paediatric otitis media, don’t stop at the Eustachian tube.

The hyoid is closely related to the lymphatic drainage of the head and neck, and restrictions around this floating bone may influence drainage from the middle ear. Adding a hyoid assessment to your examination can strengthen your clinical reasoning and make your treatment more comprehensive.

The thorax plays a much bigger role in otitis media than many practitioners realize.

By improving thoracic mobility and influencing pressure gradients between the head and chest, the thoracic pump may help support lymphatic drainage around the Eustachian tube and improve the circulation of immune cells throughout the upper respiratory tract.
