The Hebrew University. Einstein Institute of Mathematics The Institute offers B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D.

The Einstein Institute of Mathematics is one of the world's leading research institutes. Founded in 1925 as part of the inauguration of the Hebrew University, its faculty and graduates include many of the world's leading mathematicians. Our faculty includes recipients of the Nobel Prize (in economics), Fields medal, Abel Prize, several recipients of the Wolf and Israel prizes, members of the Israeli and American Academies of Arts and Sciences, and numerous other honors. Research areas represented at the Institute include foundations of mathematics, logic, algebra, group theory, representation theory, differential geometry, algebraic topology, analysis, ergodic theory and dynamical systems, number theory, probability, combinatorics and game theory. degrees, hosts postdocs and visitors from around the world, and supports numerous seminars, workshops and conferences. Institute members are also active in a variety of educational projects to promote mathematics among students, teachers and the general public.

ANNOUNCING THE 2026 WOLF PRIZE LAUREATES IN MATHEMATICS

The 2026 Wolf Prize in Mathematics is awarded to David Kazhdan of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Joseph Bernstein of Tel Aviv University, “for foundational work on representation theory, automorphic forms and algebraic geometry, and their role in creating geometric representation theory.”
Their work helped build a new mathematical language connecting algebra, geometry and representation theory, ideas that now reach across some of the deepest areas of modern mathematics.
Kazhdan introduced Kazhdan’s property (T), a concept that became fundamental in the study of groups and found applications ranging from geometry to logic. Together with George Lusztig, he also developed the Kazhdan–Lusztig basis and polynomials, work that became foundational to geometric representation theory and influential in the Langlands program.
Bernstein reshaped representation theory through the development of D-modules, now a crucial tool in algebraic geometry, representation theory and logic. His work on perverse sheaves, p-adic groups and automorphic forms helped establish major parts of the framework we now call geometric representation theory.
Together, their ideas have created connections between fields that once seemed separate, and changed the way mathematicians understand symmetry, geometry and structure.
Congratulations to David Kazhdan and Joseph Bernstein, the 2026 Wolf Prize Laureates in Mathematics.

מכון איינשטיין למתמטיקה באוניברסיטה העברית מזמין סטודנטים וסטודנטיות מצטיינים המסיימים שנה ב' או ג' בתואר הראשון להגיש מועמדות לסדנת מצטיינים במתמטיקה.

היום אנו מציינים 140 שנה להולדתו של פרופ׳ מיכאל (משה) פקטה ז״ל (1886 – 1957), מן הדמויות הבולטות בתולדות מכון איינשטיין למתמטיקה והאוניברסיטה העברית.
פקטה תרם רבות להתפתחות המחקר וההוראה בירושלים והותיר חותם עמוק על הדורות שבאו אחריו.
במהלך הקריירה שלו חקר נושאים כמו קוטר עלסופי ופולינום פקטה.
על תרומתו הוענק לו פרס ישראל במדעים מדויקים בשנת 1955 (תשט"ו).
נוסף לעבודתו בהוראה ובמחקר, לקח פרופ' פקטה חלק פעיל בניהול האוניברסיטה העברית, ושימש כרקטור האוניברסיטה בשנים 1946–1948 בהן נאלצה האוניברסיטה לנטוש את הר־הצופים.
