What a privilege we had to hear from Mrs. Pamela Cohen-activist, author, and modern day heroine. Her message that anyone has the ability to change the world, if they decide to stand up to evil and take action inspired us to find ways to make meaning in our own lives. Thank you for coming to speak to us; we can’t wait to read the book!

As our students continue to make their way across Poland, the last few days have been filled with snow and also infamous sites. Walking through Auschwitz in the snow, quiet and haunting, begs the answers to so many unanswerable questions. But the trip is also punctuated by moments of hope. Visiting the Rama’s shul and grace, Oskar Schindler’s factory, and the museum for the righteous gentiles reminds us that there is good in the world.
As we go into Shabbat we wish everyone a Shabbat filled with light and peace.

The theme of our Israel experience week is the Spirit of Israel. Today we spent the day exploring different types of creativity and how they have added to the world. Our first stop was our very own ceramics teacher Eva Avidar’s exhibit where she explores how to take things that are dying and make them eternal. Then we walked through the Florentine neighborhood seeing how graffiti artists use their talents to make statements on politics and culture.
From there we traveled to Machon Ayalon and discovered a secret underground bullet factory from the time of pre-State Israel.
We danced through the rain to our last stop- the Weitzman center where we learned how curiosity and creativity can lead to discoveries that change the world for the better.
What an amazing way to inspire our own gifts of creativity, giving us food for thought as to how we can apply our talents in the Spirit of Israel!

Day 2 in Poland was another packed experience. Starting with Tefillah in the Nozyk shul, the group then traveled to Majdnek, a concentration and death camp. The day ended with a stop at Yeshivat Chochmei Lublin, home to Daf Yomi. Bookending the day helps remind us that Poland hold the blood of many Jews but also the vibrancy of Jewish life.

Our students remaining in Israel started the chavayat Yisrael week off with a round robin with their teachers sharing a favorite piece of Torah and trip to Gazelle Valley to appreciate the beauty of Eretz Yisrael. The almond trees are in bloom, which can only mean one thing…Tu B’Shvat is just around the corner!
