Just before Rosh Hashanah of 1973, Avi Yaffe left for reserve duty at the (Bar Lev) Line of IDF strongholds along the Suez Canal. As usual, he brought his recording equipment with him, intending to record and to play music with it during his free time. Upon leaving, there was no talk of war or even thought that something might happen. When he reached the line, however, things were already quite different. On Friday, 24 hours before the fighting broke out, Avi managed to call his wife and tell her that it seemed as though something serious was about to take place. “On Saturday we already knew that the Egyptians were about to attack us. I had just barely managed to take out my microphones in time, and that was how I was able to document those very first minutes of the war.” This is very dramatic, tragic, and moving material, that until now has only been revealed to the public in small increments over the last 30 years since the war, and presents painful and authentic evidence of what happened at the Bar-Lev Line during this bloody war. Even during the dramatic rescue, Avi continued to record. After the fighting ceased, Avi continued to record testimonies of soldiers and prisoners returning from captivity. These testimonies have served as proof that the Egyptians executed bound prisoners.
