ספר חדש באתר האיגוד: "ספר אשכול הכֹּפר" במהדורה מדעית חדשה

המהדורה החדשה והמוערת של "ספר אשכול הכֹּפר" – חיבורו המונומנטלי של החכם הקראי יהודה בן אליה הדסי "האבל" (קונסטנטינופול, המאה הי"ב), בההדרת פרופ' דניאל לסקר.

הספר, מהנכסים המרכזיים של הספרות העברית והמחשבה הקראית בימי הביניים, כולל למעלה מ-350,000 מילים הנפרשות על פני כ-400 אקרוסטיכונים מורכבים. הוא מנתח את ההלכה והמצוות לפי עשרת הדברות, לצד דיונים תיאולוגיים, מדע, דקדוק, פרשנות מקרא ופולמוס נרחב עם היהדות הרבנית.

New Title: "Eshkol Ha-Kofer" in a New Scholarly Edition

We are pleased to announce the publication of the new annotated edition of "Eshkol Ha-Kofer", the monumental work by Karaite scholar Judah ben Elia Hadassi "the Mourner" (Constantinople, mid-12th century), edited by Prof. Daniel J. The World Union of Jewish Studies is pleased to collaborate with Zefat Academic College and the Center for the Study of Galilean Cultures in convening the international conference "Intersections and Encounters" (Mifgashim BaTefar).

As highlighted by our partners in Zefat, the most groundbreaking and fruitful research often emerges at the nexus between disciplines. The upcoming conference will bring together scholars from Jewish Studies and the Social Sciences for an in-depth dialogue on tradition, society, culture, and identity.

שמחים לשתף בספרו הראשון של חבר האיגוד, ד"ר יובל פרנקל, "חולשת הדעת: סיפורי עימות בין חכמים בתלמוד הבבלי" (בהוצאת מאגנס), שראה אור בסיוע מענק הפרסום של האיגוד העולמי למדעי היהדות.
בין דפיו של התלמוד הבבלי מצויים עשרות סיפורים המתארים עימותים חריפים, קצרים בתקשורת ומאבקי כבוד ועלבון אישיים בין חכמי התלמוד. בספר "חולשת הדעת", יובל פרנקל מציע לראות בסיפורים אלו סוגה ספרותית מובחנת בפני עצמה בתוך הקורפוס התלמודי.
באמצעות ניתוח ספרותי ונרטיבי מרתק, הספר מנתק את הסיפורים הללו מהקשרם המיידי בסוגיה ומביט על תכונותיהם כמכלול. דרך קריאה מחודשת בסיפורים מוכרים (כמו ביקורו של משה בבית מדרשו של רבי עקיבא או חזרתו של חוני המעגל), הספר משרטט את מערכות היחסים הטעונות בין האמוראים, ובוחן כיצד התלמוד מעבד ומציג את הפגיעות הרגשיות, המתחים והאנושיות של יוצריו.

First-Book Publication Grant
We are pleased to feature "The Fragility of the Mind: Stories of Conflict between Sages in the Babylonian Talmud" (published by Magnes Press), the first book by WUJS member Dr. Yuval Fraenkel, published with the support of our publication grant.
The pages of the Babylonian Talmud contain dozens of stories depicting sharp conflicts, miscommunications, and deeply personal struggles over honor and insult among the Sages. In "The Fragility of the Mind," Yuval Fraenkel proposes viewing these accounts as a distinct literary genre within the Talmudic corpus.
Through a compelling literary and narrative analysis, the book isolates these stories from their immediate textual contexts to examine their shared characteristics as a whole. Offering fresh readings of well-known narratives (such as Moses visiting the academy of Rabbi Akiva or the return of Honi the Circle-Maker), Fraenkel maps out the emotionally charged relationships between the Amoraim, exploring how the Talmud captures and processes the emotional vulnerabilities, tensions, and profound humanity of its creators.

פרופ' הר ליווה את האיגוד מאז הקמתו, והשתתף בכל הקונגרסים העולמיים למדעי היהדות מאז שנת 1957.

The World Union of Jewish Studies mourns the passing of Prof. Moshe David Herr (1935–2026), Professor Emeritus at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and one of the leading historians of the Jewish people in the Second Temple, Mishnah, and Talmud periods.
Prof. Herr accompanied the Union since its inception and participated in every World Congress of Jewish Studies since 1957.

Our condolences to his family, his students, and all who cherish his memory.

שמחים לשתף בספרו הראשון של חבר האיגוד, ד"ר עמית גבריהו, "נשך" (בהוצאת מאגנס), שראה אור בסיוע מענק הפרסום של האיגוד העולמי למדעי היהדות.
איסור הריבית בספרות חז"ל הוא נושא רחב ומסועף בהרבה ממה שנראה במבט ראשון. הוא לא חל רק על הלוואות כסף, אלא משפיע על מגוון עסקאות, השקעות, יחסים חברתיים ואפילו על שיחות חולין. בניגוד לאיסור המקראי, אין לו קשר לעוני – הוא חל על עשירים ועניים כאחד.
בספר "נשך" (בהוצאת מאגנס), שנכתב בסיוע מענק פרסום מטעם האיגוד, עמית גבריהו מתחקה אחר תולדות האיסור הזה בספרות חז"ל. הספר מראה כיצד חכמים השתמשו בשפה כלכלית וברגולציה עסקית כדי לנסות ולעצב אידיאל של "חברת שווים" עירונית, שבה כל הגברים היהודים שווים במעמדם ללא תלות בהונם – מודל ששונה מאוד הן מהדגם הרומי והן מהדגם הנוצרי של אותה תקופה.

Book Publication Grant
We are pleased to feature "Neshek" (published by Magnes Press), the first book by WUJS member Dr. Amit Gvaryahu, published with the support of our publication grant.
The prohibition of charging interest (usury) in Rabbinic literature is far more extensive and complex than it might appear at first glance. It applies not only to monetary loans but extends to various transactions, investments, social relations, and even everyday conversation. Unlike the biblical prohibition, it has no direct connection to poverty, applying to the rich and poor alike.
In the book "Neshek" (published by Magnes Press), which was supported by a publication grant from the World Union of Jewish Studies, Amit Gvaryahu traces the history of this prohibition throughout Rabbinic literature. The book demonstrates how the Sages utilized economic language and business regulation to shape an ideal "society of equals"—an urban community where all Jewish men held equal status regardless of their wealth. This model stood in stark contrast to both the Roman system of patrons and clients and the Christian model of wealthy benefactors caring for the poor.

במרכז הספר עומדת "קדושתא" – מערכת פיוטים לתפילה – שחיבר ר’ ישועה מעזה בשנת 1026, בעקבות מותו הפתאומי של בנו היחיד יאשיהו בן השש. לצד שמירה על הכללים הנוקשים של הסוגה, האב יצק לתוכה ביטויים אישיים יוצאי דופן של כאב, אבל וצידוק הדין.

Final Book Spotlight as Hebrew Book Week Concludes: On the Death of a Son | By Shulamit Elizur
