🔬 If commercialization begins long before a technology is ready for market, where should the role of a technology transfer organization begin?

Alon Natanson, CEO of Yissum, and Gady Paran, Director of Marketing at Yissum, have published a new opinion piece in The Jerusalem Post, “The Next Evolution of Technology Transfer,” exploring the evolving role of technology transfer organizations in a changing innovation landscape.

As stated in the article, the core mission remains clear: intellectual property management, licensing and startup creation remain the foundation of technology transfer.

But commercialization often begins much earlier, through relationships, conversations and collaborations that can start long before a technology is ready for commercialization.

🤝 Drawing on Yissum’s experience over the past year, the article explores three complementary approaches: encouraging earlier dialogue between researchers and industry, strengthening collaboration between academic institutions, and bringing together the broader innovation community.

“Technology transfer organizations do not need a new mission. They need a broader view of how that mission succeeds.”

🌐 Looking further ahead, the article suggests:
“The organizations that create the greatest long-term impact may be those that also invest in something less tangible: the ecosystems that enable greater commercialization.”

➡️ Commercialization remains the destination. Building the conditions that allow more discoveries to reach that destination may become one of the defining responsibilities of technology transfer in the years ahead.

About Yissum
Yissum is the technology transfer company of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. We support academic research teams in building research collaborations with industry. We are seeking an organized, service-oriented professional for a role combining business development and coordination work.

Key Responsibilities
Manage a portfolio of researchers and technologies, documentation, and follow-up.
Serve as a responsive contact for researchers and external partners.
Support business development through research, analysis, and preparation of materials.
Coordinate industry collaborations, sponsored research, and innovation projects.
Support grant applications and related administrative submissions.
Maintain accurate records of technologies, contacts, meetings, and tasks.
Plan and administer events, visits, and delegations, including agendas, logistics, materials, and follow-up.

Qualifications
Academic degree in a scientific or technical field (e.g., Physics, Engineering, Chemistry, Computer Science, or a related discipline).
Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Strong interest in science, technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
Ability to work independently, take initiative, and manage multiple tasks.
Fluent in Hebrew and English.
Familiarity with the Israeli innovation ecosystem, including startups, corporate innovation, and technology commercialization – an advantage.
Familiarity with industry sectors and innovation processes – an advantage.
Familiarity with Israel Innovation Authority (IIA) programs and other research and innovation funding schemes – an advantage.

Employment Terms
Position based at Yissum's offices, Givat Ram Campus, Jerusalem.

🔬 Every week, your intestine rebuilds itself. Scientists at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem have now uncovered one of the hidden cellular networks that helps make this extraordinary process possible.

The human intestine is one of the body's fastest-renewing organs, replacing almost its entire inner lining every 5-7 days while maintaining the delicate balance required for healthy function.

Now, a new study led by PhD student Amal Jerbi and Dr. Michal Shoshkes Carmel from the Department of Developmental Biology and Cancer Research at the Faculty of Medicine, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and published in Cellular and Molecular Gastroenterology and Hepatology, sheds new light on the remarkable cellular support system behind this process.

🧬 Using single-cell RNA sequencing and advanced spatial imaging, the research team discovered that specialized support cells known as telocytes do not form a single, uniform network. Instead, they are organized into four genetically distinct cell populations, each occupying a specific location along the intestine and delivering distinct molecular signals that help support intestinal stem cells and guide tissue renewal.

🔍 By combining molecular profiling with spatial mapping, the researchers generated a detailed atlas of the telocyte network, providing important new insight into how the intestine maintains the delicate balance between continuous regeneration and normal function.

💡 While the study was conducted in mice, it establishes an important foundation for future research into conditions in which this balance is disrupted, including inflammatory bowel disease, tissue injury, infections, aging, and colorectal cancer, while also providing a valuable framework for exploring whether similar mechanisms exist in humans.
