In the 1950s, almost the entire community of Cochin chose to make aliyah to Israel.
That journey inspired "The Blue Butterfly of Cochin", a children's book by writer and Jewish educator of Barkai Yeshivah in Brooklyn. Through Leah - a young girl torn between excitement and grief as her community leaves everything behind - Ariana explores a tender truth: home isn't just a place. It's the stories and memories you carry inside.

The Well Global Educators Seminar was filled with curiosity, bright emotions, and countless moments of discovery. From exploring centuries-old manuscripts and photographs to discussing how primary sources can transform learning.
But beyond the collections, The Well is about people. It is about building a global community of educators who inspire one another, share ideas, and invest in their students.

Our team at the National Library of Israel is starting this week inspired and energized after five unforgettable days of learning, exploring the Library's collections, exchanging ideas, and building connections with educators from around the world.
The end of a journey is always a little bittersweet, but we know this is only the beginning. We look forward to growing this community together, strengthening the connections we've built, and seeing more schools discover and bring the National Library of Israel's educational resources into their classrooms.

This week, Shuvi Hoffman, NLI Global Education Manager, had the honor of speaking with Prof. David Stern from Harvard University about the power of learning through primary sources. Their conversation explored how encountering the tangible, material side of history - and the people behind it, those who created, cherished, and preserved these artifacts - can spark curiosity and deep engagement in young learners.
In an age of overwhelming, unfiltered information, the National Library believes education can offer something different: a closer look at authentic representations of our diverse shared story.
The third day of the WELL seminar was dedicated to NLI pedagogy. Participants explored NLI educational resources and learned new tools. Educators also held a session to share their challenges with one another and seek advice. A new day awaits!

In 1917 Sarah Schenirer cleared out her sewing studio in Kraków and started teaching twenty-five girls. Today her Bais schools span more than a dozen countries. This is the inspirational story of Sarah Schenirer — the woman who built Jewish education for girls out of nothing.

Last week, we welcomed educators from Nefesh B'Nefesh's ZEI Educator Fellowship to the National Library of Israel for a tour and an interactive workshop on teaching with maps as primary sources.
During the workshop, educators explored different maps of Jerusalem from the NLI's collections and revealed how geography, history, culture, and politics have shaped the city over time. Examining historical and contemporary maps side by side encourages learners to ask questions, analyze change over time, think critically, and uncover the stories maps have to tell.
It was a pleasure to introduce this inspiring cohort to the National Library's educational resources and demonstrate how primary sources can bring Israel education to life. We look forward to continuing to work with these educators throughout the year!
