The Polis Institute was founded in 2011 by a group of academics with the shared goal of promoting the study of ancient and Semitic languages. The founders believe that the best way to understand an ancient or modern text or culture is to become immersed in the language through listening, speaking, writing, and reading. With this philsophy in mind, our director Christophe Rico and a group of scholars developed the Polis Method, a unique synthesis of teaching methodologies that mimic the way that children assimilate their mother tongues and encourage students to be involved in learning process. The Polis Institute offers immersive classes in Ancient Greek, Biblical Hebrew, Latin, Modern Standard Arabic and Spoken Arabic (including reading and writing), Classical Syriac, and Sumerian. Our students and teachers only speak the target in class, and we organize events where the students can practice the language in a social setting. We are also happy to offer MA programs in Ancient Philology and in Near Eastern Languages, with a one year certificate program for each, and a certifiate program in Fluency in Ancient Greek.
