Gimme shelter ๐
For Hand in Hand families and staff, we take a deep breath when stepping into the school gates. Weโre missing that during the summer break.
Walking into the HIH Jerusalem school gates, youโre greeted with a sign directing you to a shelter โ right alongside an incredible student mosaic of trees and birds.
Itโs a literal bomb shelter. Itโs also the way in to the home of safety and love we share at Hand in Hand.

Tonight is the 9th of Av, a public day of mourning in the Jewish calendar. It's a day of historical remembrance, but really it's a day to reflect on the consequences of unconstrained hatred.
It's time for these lessons to redirect us toward understanding. Partnership. Trust. It's time to choose radical hope and transform our shared home into a safe home for all.
Our children need it. We need it. We all deserve a life of peace.

We're missing our sweet kids these days, and hope they're having a great time at water parks or riding their bikes or eating popcorn at the movies. We hope that summer break will also be a break from sirens and violence--the kind of summer that every kid deserves.

Every four years, groups of people from diverse, and even adversarial, backgrounds get together to kick a ball. Millions of others around the world start paying attention to each other, and sometimes even root for each other.
So you know we're gonna be VERY into the World Cup.
To be fair, these HIH Jerusalem kids aren't exclusively celebrating the multicultural, shared joy of the World Cup. But it's nice when it works on both levels ๐

Like the sweet Raseel and Nili, who made excellent use of the "Dialogue Chairs" at HIH Kfar Saba - Alif Bet this year ๐๐๐
The rules of the Dialogue Chairs are simple: it's a place to listen and be heard when the kids need to communicate intentionally with each other.

12 years ago, two violent criminals broke into HIH Jerusalem campus. They spray painted horrific, racist graffiti on the walls and set fire to the 1st grade classrooms.
The next morning, the 1st graders came to school and teachers had to find the words to explain to these sweet six-year-olds what happened. We rebuilt right away, but the deeper work of repair remains ongoing. We're still looking for the right words.
Yet incredibly, their families wouldn't give up on Hand in Hand and now these 1st graders have graduated high school. What an honor to celebrate with them.
