Hand in Hand: Center for Jewish-Arab Education in Israel Hand in Hand builds shared society in Israel via Jewish-Arab bilingual schools and communities The Israeli school system needs Hand in Hand.

Jewish and Arab citizens of Israel live in a divided society, with few opportunities for meaningful interaction between these two major groups, especially in elementary and secondary schools, which are almost entirely segregated. Working in partnership with Israel's Ministry of Education, Hand in Hand brings Jewish and Arab children and their families together in integrated bilingual schools throughout Israel. Hand in Hand has obtained public certification for all seven of its public schools, along with substantial public investment. When Hand in Hand was founded in 1997, many doubted whether the experiment could work. Now there are over 2,000 students. There is demand for new schools, partnerships in new communities, and higher enrollment in the established programs. Since October 7, 2023, we have discovered new depths of human anger and human compassion.

Our dear community member Karen Oryejovsky and her family are survivors of the October 7th attack. They lost friends and relatives that day, but Karen has not wavered in her conviction that peace-building is the only viable path forward. We share her remarkable words with you here.

Knowing that Jews, Palestinians, and many others will continue living together in this land, how can we choose anything but partnership? If we want our future to be better than our past, how can we choose anything but repair?

Hand in Hand joins in mourning the immense sorrow for the lives cruelly taken on October 7, 2023, and the horrific losses in Gaza in the three years since.

As Vivienne Silver, a peace activist killed that day, famously said: "we all deserve a better life."

The HIH Gesher sukkah wasn't the only one built in a Palestinian-Arab town this Sukkot holiday.

But we're betting it was the only one created with loving intention as a space of belonging and shared learning.

Religion does not need to divide us.
And sharing holiday celebrations is such a rich way to expand the moment into an experience of connection and understanding.

We're back to our regular schedule today as the Jewish fall holidays are now complete. But as we get back into science, reading, and art, we're still carrying the magic holiday moments too.

To be truly safe inside a sukkah -- with its vulnerable walls and open doorway -- there needs to be safety outside the sukkah too.

The kind of safety that is expansive and collective.
A mutual safety that's both idealistic and practical.

The kind of safety that only exists in a place of peace.

As the Jewish holiday of Sukkot begins tonight, we're holding tight to this vision for our children and the whole world.

Rabbi Nahman of Breslov famously put it best:

"If you believe it is possible to damage, believe it is possible to repair!"

May this Yom Kippur be the fuel to repair ourselves, our society, and the world.
