The Israel Institute for Advanced Studies mourns the passing of Prof. Ada Yonath, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry and one of Israel’s most influential scientists.

Prof. Yonath transformed our understanding of the ribosome through pioneering structural research, work that earned her the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and helped reveal how some antibiotics act at the molecular level. Her scientific journey became a remarkable example of curiosity, courage and perseverance — pursuing questions others considered nearly impossible and continuing until they yielded new understanding.
Over the years, Prof. Yonath was also part of the scientific life of IIAS, participating in conferences and Advanced Schools in the Life Sciences and sharing her work with researchers and students from Israel and around the world.

Her scientific legacy extends far beyond the discoveries for which she was recognized. She leaves behind an example of what can happen when a researcher is willing to ask ambitious questions — and persist in searching for answers.
We extend our deepest condolences to her family, colleagues, students and the wider scientific community.
May her memory be a blessing.

Jews and Christians in the Early Centuries: A Memorial Symposium in Memory of Prof. David Rokeah

On January 1, the IIAS hosted a memorial symposium marking the first anniversary of the passing of David Rokeah, a professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and a renowned expert in Ancient History.

The evening was organized by the Department of History and the Department of the History of the Jewish People and Contemporary Jewry. It brought together scholars to honor Prof. Rokeah's profound legacy in the study of Greco-Roman history and the Jewish experience during the Second Temple, Mishnah, and Talmud periods.

The symposium was chaired by Prof. Ayelet Even-Ezra, with opening remarks from Prof. Yitzhak Hen (Director of the IIAS) and Dr. Oded Zinger. The program featured lectures by Prof. Moshe David Herr, Prof. Albert Baumgarten, Prof. Oded Irshai, and Prof. Daniel Schwartz, reflecting the remarkable breadth of Prof. Rokeah’s scholarly contributions.

We honor his memory and the enduring impact of his research.

Genetics and History: An Interdisciplinary Day with Prof. Walter Pohl

On December 11, 2025, the IIAS was honored to host Prof. Walter Pohl (University of Vienna and the Austrian Academy of Sciences) for a series of events exploring the intersection of archaeogenetics and historical research.

The day commenced with an intensive morning seminar dedicated to graduate students and post-doctoral fellows, providing young researchers with a unique opportunity to engage with Prof. Pohl’s methodological approaches. The program culminated in a public lecture titled "Genetics and History: How to Explore the Past Together."

Drawing on his leadership in the ERC Synergy Grant project HistoGenes, Prof. Pohl discussed the transformative potential of integrating genomic data with archaeology and history. He addressed the complexities of identity formation and ethnicity in the early Middle Ages, emphasizing how interdisciplinary collaboration can provide new historical insights while avoiding outdated paradigms.

We extend our sincere thanks to Prof. Pohl for sharing his pioneering research and to all the participants for their engaging contributions to this important dialogue.
