I used to take this so personally.

For years, I let that fear of sounding clumsy keep me quiet. I’d default to English because it was safer. It protected my ego. But it also kept me totally isolated from the culture and the people I cared about most.
Here is the harsh truth I had to learn: The problem wasn’t my accent, and it wasn’t my age. The problem was that I kept trying to learn a living, breathing language completely alone in my living room.
You can’t learn to swim by reading a book about water. And you can’t learn to speak Hebrew without opening your mouth in front of real people.
