In 1970, a Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher threw a no-hitter while tripping on L*D.
Dock Ellis thought it was still Thursday. Then the phone rang: he was pitching that night. He rushed to the mound with his perception melting, the ball changing size, the catcher fading in and out. Eight walks, one hit batter, and not a single hit.
So how does someone hallucinating pull off an elite physical performance? One idea is a bizarre, high-risk version of flow: when the anxious, thinking mind steps aside, deeply ingrained mechanics take over.
Definitely not a training method. But it raises a real question, how much better might we move when the doubting mind finally gets out of the way?
