For a multi-location DSO, imaging compliance is not one task.

It is a repeated workflow:

Prepare and organize the image
Complete the analysis

Document the interpretation

What do manual cephalometric workflows cost?

Eight hours a month may not sound like a compliance cost.

But when those hours are spent preparing, checking, correcting, and documenting cephalometric analyses, they are part of the cost of maintaining a consistent clinical record.

In a CephX case study, an orthodontist handling 10–15 cephalometric X-rays per week estimated that manual analysis required almost eight hours every month.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the mean hourly wage for an orthodontist was $124.71 in May 2025.

That puts the annual value of those eight monthly hours at approximately:

$11,972 for one orthodontist

$59,861 across five orthodontists

$119,722 across ten orthodontists

This is a labor-value scenario, not a guaranteed saving. It also excludes staff time, corrections, payroll overhead, and the cost of inconsistent documentation between locations.

The ADA advises dentists to include their interpretation of radiographic images in the clinical notes, even when no pathosis is found. It also recommends regular record audits and consistent documentation protocols.

For practices and DSOs, the cost is not simply producing the analysis.

It is producing, reviewing, documenting, and retrieving it consistently across every provider and location.

Where do patients draw the line with AI in dentistry?

A recent Humana study highlights an interesting tension as AI becomes more integrated into dental care: patients appear more comfortable with AI supporting administrative tasks than participating in clinical decision-making.

According to the research, 40% of respondents said they were comfortable with AI estimating billing costs.

When it came to confirming diagnoses, 36% were comfortable , while 30% said they were actively uncomfortable with AI being used in this way.

For us at CephX, the interesting question isn’t whether AI belongs in dentistry. It’s how AI should be integrated in a way that supports clinicians while maintaining patient trust.

AI can provide clinicians with powerful analysis, greater efficiency and additional information to support decision-making. But technology should enhance clinical expertise - not distance clinicians from their patients.
