In the past years, I have taught many students from all over the world and from all ranges of ages - from the middle twenties until the late 70s.
We all know that age is a big factor when it comes to learning a new language, but there is a misconception that older people can’t learn a new language.
I talk with many successful people, companies owners, organization CEOs, chairman/women, and community leaders every day.
All people that achieved great goals in their lives.
They know what is the key to success in all aspects of life, but still, when it comes to believing in their ability to learn Hebrew they tell me ”I can’t believe that in my age I will be able to learn and speak”.
When they say it, I can identify the fear of failure, and my answer is always the same- the only failure is giving up, the only failure is not pursuing your dream, the only failure is not even trying.
I taught dozens of students and the one who sticks made a progress, each one in their paste and unique process.

95% of all students feel insecure when speaking Hebrew, regardless of their Hebrew level.
You might think:
1. “I just need to enlarge my vocabulary, then I'll speak in confidence.״
2. “I need to learn all the tenses, then I'll be able to talk freely.״
3. “I need to read challenging articles, stop and learn every new word, then I'll be able to speak correctly without mistakes.״
In all of my years as a Hebrew instructor, I have learned ONE important fact.
Gaining confidence when speaking Hebrew as a second language is not dependent on non of the above.
Talking in confidence requires a certain mindset.
The best thing you can do for yourself is finding the right set and setting to develop this mindset:
1. I can always find a way to express myself.
2. People don't judge me when I speak Hebrew. They appreciate me more when I'm making the effort to speak their language.
3. I want to be focused on the person that I am speaking with, not 4. focused on the mistakes I might or might not make.
Learning Hebrew is a lifelong journey, let's have fun and challenge my brain!

Good news for the Hebrew students!

עדכון חשוב – רפורמה בסימני הניקוד!

לאחר דיונים ממושכים ולאחר בחינת הצעות רבות שהתקבלו ונבדקו באקדמיה במרוצת השנים וגם בעקבות פניות רבות שאנחנו מקבלים מן המכללות למורים ואף מן החוגים להוראת הלשון המתקשים ללמד את כללי הניקוד התקין, התקבלה החלטה תקדימית לפשט את מערכת סימני הניקוד.

סימני הניקוד המשמשים אותנו היום הומצאו ושוכללו בהדרגה במחצית השנייה של האלף הראשון לסה"נ בטבריה, והם מכונים "הניקוד הטברני". מטרתם של ממציאי הניקוד ומפתחיו הייתה לשמר את מסורת ההגייה במקרא כפי שנָהגה במשך מאות רבות של שנים. דא עקא, מסורת זו אינה נהוגה בימינו.

בימינו משמשים בפי דוברי העברית רק חמש תנועות אך מערכת הסימנים כוללת כעשרה סימנים שונים. כך למשל אין בקרב דוברי העברית כיום הבדל בהגייה בין קמץ לפתח; בין שורוק לקיבוץ, בין צירי לסגול או בין קמץ קטן לחולם.

לפיכך כדי להקל על השימוש בסימני הניקוד ועל הוראת הניקוד – מעתה ישמשו רק חמישה סימני ניקוד בסיסיים המשקפים את חמש התנועות הנוהגות בימינו:

👈 פתח סַ – לכל התנועות בהגיית A
(גם במקום קמץ וחטף פתח)
‍‍
👈 צירי סֵ – לכל התנועות בהגיית E
(גם במקום סגול, חטף סגול ושווא נע)

👈 חיריק סִי – לכל התנועות בהגיית I
(בוטלה ההבחנה בין חיריק חסר לחיריק מלא)
‍‍
👈 חולם סוֹ – לכל התנועות בהגיית O
(גם במקום חולם חסר, קמץ קטן וחטף קמץ)
‍‍
👈 שורוק סוּ – לכל התנועות בהגיית U
(שורוק גם במקום קיבוץ)

גילים היא צורת הרבים של גיל.
גילאים היא צורת הריבוי של גִּילַאי.

ומה הם גילאים? בני אותו גיל, מי שמשתייכים לקבוצה של בעלי גיל שווה.

שימו לב כי המילים גילַאי וגילאים משמשות בעיקר בתחום הסוציולוגיה, ובשאר ההקשרים אין צורך להשתמש בהן כלל.

כך גם נאמר: הכניסה מותרת לכל הגילים (ולא "לכל הגילאים").
