Michelangelo’s David was enclosed in a cylindrical brick and sandbag shelter in Florence in 1943 to shield it from Allied bombing raids. The structure, assembled by museum conservators and engineers, wrapped the 5.17-meter marble statue in concentric protection without any architectural ornament or aesthetic detail. This intervention marked a moment when emergency preservation dictated spatial design. The decision to use a circular form, rather than a box, reduced impact points and allowed better distribution of blast forces—an approach informed more by structural logic than visual consideration. Across Italy, wartime efforts created temporary architectures where conservation replaced composition, and the primary material became brick, not stone or marble.
